I tried Stellaris expecting Vicky II or at least EU4 in space. What I got was a boring ass snoozefest similar to Sins of a Solar Empire. Can confirm its not GS and fits perfectly with 4x.

I wouldn't mind a space GS, but Crisis of the Confederation, a mod for CK2, fits that way better than Stellaris does. Stellaris is standard 4x, boring ass development, no different starts, everyone starts at the same level and you can't do a world (galactic?) police playthrough or underdog rising to the top, its always the exact same game with just different traits and a different look.

I just feel non historical "GSGs" aren't GSGs at all. Allow me to explain.

With proper GSGs, like Victoria 2, HoI3, hell even EU4 to a degree, you have some notion of "balance of power", which I feel is absolutely crucial to a grand strategy. Victoria in particular is perfect for this. "Oh, I need rubber to help my tank industyry to corner the market? I'll just invade Brazil. Oh no, Britain is friendly with them, guess I'll have to fund railroads and industry in Brazil to get them to come round to me diplomatically so I don't upset Britain." See, balance of power? It requires strategy. The same is true, to a lesser extent, in EU4, although obviously not as good but you can do similar things with trade goods in that game.

Now compare this to Stellaris, Aurora, DW, or any other meme non historical space game. You simply blob. There's no strategy, you just blob. You expand your ebin blobby space empire and no one stops you and there's no real diplomacy to speak of, no markets to corner, no established powers to hinder you for their own benefit, it's just fucking blobbing.

CK2 also falls foul of this, but it has incest so it's given a pass.

Being a Grand Strategy game doesn't require them to be historically based, and you'll notice I never invited them to be posted. Also, cutting it to six pictures would take out Hearts of Iron IV, which while shit, doesn't seem fair to actually exclude despite me wanting to do so.

Balance of Power has nothing to do with historicity and historicity has nothing to do with grand strategy, which is generally just defined in real life as simply strategy spanning long periods of time, dealing with multiple enemies who can also be allies, and focusing on both wartime and peacetime both. Distant Worlds has to an extent "balance of power", and Aurora 4x has very little blobbing, it's mostly autism. Stellaris is just a piss-poor game, which has nothing to do with whether or not it's grand strategy - which it is in concept if not in truth. Remember that /gsg/ used to have Civilization IV posters and shouted out Civilzation V posters
That being said, just because it's grand strategy doesn't mean it should be discussed here because there's a special thread just for them, it's like discussing I don't know MGQ in /hgg2d/ or F/GO in /mbgg/.

It's just unfair all around because you have more or less seven games that are posted with any regularity, with EU III, DH, HoI III, and HoI IV being posted less. You want to talk about definitions, literally anything could be described as both "grand", which means absolutely nothing, and "strategy", which essentially means you need to think about, which again, could mean anything. Hell, GTA is a grand strategy, it's a big franchise, so it's grand, and you need to strategically shoot people.

No, Grand Strategy has an actual, real life definition, as in Grand Strategy is to Strategy what Strategy is to Tactics, and is basically just national direction and planning. Civilization certainly is grand strategy, it even has the balance of power thing going on to an extent esp. with certain mods, but just because it is grand strategy doesn't mean it should be in /gsg/ because there is a seperate general just for 4x games. Learn to read my posts before you kneejerk.

DH should stay due to how based it is. EU3 is based, with it's movable nodes, but it's day has gone. DH in comparison is a standalone that thanks to KR will live forever.

Maybe DH will be the Civilization IV of Hearts of Iron but I doubt it. Civilization IV became somewhat immortalized because V was so shit and VI is somehow even worse.

I wouldn't care too much except for:
