What's a good grippy tyre for the size 195/65r15?

I heard Yokohama's 740 GTX is a very good tyre, just looking for any other input.

thats very narrow, but thats not a bad choice

Don't even bother getting something that grips to pavement really well. That tire size is way too small for any type of actual performance. There's no point in dropping tons of money on your civic. What you should get is a high performance all season.

With that being said, I recommend continental Conti pro contacts. Continental makes some of the best tires money can buy.

Cheers mate, I bought some Chinese shit tyres from a friend's shop for $40 per, they work for what they are but I'm not trusting them when it rains or any other condition.

I'll grab a set of those when I get the money, really good reviews on them, thanks again.

that's a shit tire size. go up to bigger oem wheels from the higher trim level. get michelins. they're the best.

I threw some Sumitomo HTR AS Po2's on my focus last October, it handled a Chicago winter pretty handily. Cost $67~ a tire, no complaints so far.

So I have an '04 Mustang GT right now. Like the power but coming from a Miata I hate the handling.

How bad an idea would it be to replace the Mustang with a ~'94 Corvette?

What would you recommend going to to find some extra grip?

Not bad. They handle well, cheap as fuck. But you'll need to work on it here and there for sure

Go up to 17" or 18" and get some hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires, I use them and I adore them the grip is outstanding.

Does anyone have tire recommendations for 205/55/r16.

The Mustang has been a parade of suffering, replacing parts all the time. How much worse are C4 Vettes?

pilot sport 3 for good all round grip, or federal 595 rsr are cheap and real good in the dry, but will have a much shorter life than the ps3's.

Can you get a tesla model S without the fuckhueg ipad?

Just curious, that thing is a massive turn off.

what car?

15 civic

I put $30 guardsman from Sears on my civic.

Been three years and 30k miles. They're perfectly fine, grip is shit tho which is fun.

I posted this in the last thread but it died before I got to see any answer.

If my car has a non interference engine and the timing belt snaps how do you go about putting it back in time? I know there are timing marks but how would you know everything is lined up on the same stroke and such?

Alright OP:
You aren't gonna be running laps with that car. You aren't gonna be trying to out perform anyone. Just get whatever fucking tires that are safe and go have fun hooning. Christ alive, you fucking people sometimes.

Definitely not trying to, I just want some better tyres that feel good to drive with.

I suppose that's reasonable but I imagine you'll be hard pressed to find such a thing. If that's what you really want just get bigger/wider wheels and you'll have much wider rubber available

POTENZA POLE POSITION

Pilot sport cup

What are your wheel specs? You could probably get a 205 if your wheel is 6 in wide

AWD vs RWD. Which is better and why? Does RWD have an advantage in cornering? Is the only advantage of AWD during straight lines and drags?
What about AWD in drifting?

If the timing mark on the crank pulley is pointed up, then the first cylinder is at tdc. Now rotate the cams until they're pointed straight up as well. Throw the belt on and crank the engine a few times with a ratchet via the crank pulley. confirm that the pulley marks are lined up to the markings on the engine/timing covers. Count the teeth between the two cams.

if i put high octane in a car that doesnt require it will i get any problems with the fuel not igniting properly? my plugs are also 0.1mm bigger than what is specified but according to my dad that doesnt matter

>AWD vs RWD. Which is better and why?
AWD is heavier and sometimes promotes understeer on asphalt. RWD is lighter and is easier to control the rotation of the car via the throttle. Personally I prefer RWD because it's more fun to me but I also really like some AWD ones.

>Does RWD have an advantage in cornering?
yes due to less weight. Awd is faster on corner exit though. LMP1 cars are AWD and they are some of the fastest cars in the world. But F1 has them outmatched. It's hard to say which layout has a higher performance ceiling overall.

>Is the only advantage of AWD during straight lines and drags?
no, it's vastly superior on dirt and snow. Snow tires are more important than drivetrain in snow though.

>What about AWD in drifting?
it's not the same as RWD drifting. You need a ton of power to drift an AWD. Think Ken block gymkhana.

High octane just protects against pre-detonation and pinging. It burns more consistently and precisely than low octane, so pinging doesn't occur. It also resists preignition from the pressure, so higher compression ratios can be used.
It all burns regardless though, you won't risk a misfire.

>But F1 has them outmatched.
AWD was outlawed in F1 because it was seen to provide an unfair advantage. Infact, any racing series where AWD has competed against RWD, AWD wins. RWD can maintain higher mid corner speeds but AWD has higher corner exit speeds. Due to being able to get back on power sooner.
For fun, RWD wins, for outright speed, AWD.

>spending more than 3k on a civic
kys

yeah but i put 95 in the tank and started getting detonation so i put regular 91 in and it stopped

Took over the payment at 200 a month with around 2 years left, I love the car anyway.

That doesn't make any sense, it wouldn't detonate. High octane is detonation resistant

it is a mystery

If you're worried about wet weather performance, i suggest pretty much anything fgrom the Kumho Ecsta range, i ised to run 195s on the fromt end of my SW20.
They're not going to set your world alight but they a decently grippy in the dry and have good water dispersion in the wet. The price is pretty reasonable too.

What should i do to my stock 96 MX-5? I'm new to working on cars besides basic maintinence, so i just want a small starter project to improve performance or something.

I need a scanner that can do both obdi and obdii
Any recommendations? Most of what appears when I google are recs for obdii only.

Do most FWD cars have torque steer? I have been driving my mom's RAV4 Sport and that thing jerks the wheel over when you punch the throttle. It seems almost dangerous. How do people tolerate it? This is obviously coming from a guy who has driven almost exclusively RWD in his life.

Direzza.

Tyres, move up from there.
Then bilstein/konis with eibach and swaybars or skip them entirely and get _decent_ coilovers. Tbh there isn't really much on the performance front other than turbo, so just focus on chassis/suspension.

Damn, summer Veeky Forums sucks.

I'll be perfectly honest, I always thought torque steer was a meme until going out of my way to find extreme instances. I've never driven FWD in my life.

Thanks for (not) answering my question, moron.

pls someone respond, should I get rid of the tank while its still relatively new? (around 1-2 years)

Hey guys, I need help. I want to start to learn about how to work on cars, but I don't know where to start. I'd love to slowly repair a car as a project, but I really have no clue where to start barring searching shit on youtube. I know you guys likely get this sort of shit question daily, so I'm happy to take a link to something and gtfo.

If anybody wants to hear a sob story:
>Be me, uni student
>Dad is a very, very talented engineer
>Has an ego the size of Jupiter
>Is an incredible elitist about a lot of things
>Really stunted my learning for a long time with his constant prattling about how I was "just in it to look cool"
>He thinks I'm studying engineering to make him proud
>I really just love working on things; started out with woodworking projects and slowly trying to move onto mechanical stuff
>A lot of cheap, shite cars in my area going for as low as a few hundred
>A lot of them seem to have a list of problems that are fixable, but the owner was upgrading and cbf'd sinking any time and money into what was basically a second, crappier car
>Have a secret fantasy of buying one and slowly getting it going
>I don't even care if I can't do it all myself, just doing some would be enough
>But I don't know where to start turning an older car with a few issues into a usable vehicle
>Pls help Veeky Forums, you're the only ones I can think of who can point me in the right direction

you need a lot of hand holding dontcha
how is this a sob story you sheltered little shit

I have a 10 Golf 2.5 it had that exact tire size stock. Got some 17s with 245/35? Something like that. A little wide for the wheel wells but the tires came with the wheels, and they're Goodyear pilots.. but dude WAY better grip lol it's a new car.

Do it

e90 320d 160k km 6k euro
y/n as a first car

If it has been properly maintained then yes

how do I find that out?
just test drive it and see if it feels weird?
ask for the service history? if he gives it what should I be looking into
or take it to a mechanic or something and let him inspect it

Take it to a mechanic if you can spare the money, if not then at least make sure oil changes, transmission, cooling system and possibly timing belt have been serviced.

What's the cutoff price for financing a car?

Hey all I have oil burn issue maybe 1 qt per 800 miles in my 2001 Echo and if it continues carbon will fuck the catalytic converter and smoke/stinky exhaust. Really want an engine rebuild, is it feasible to DIY piston rings/valve seals for someone with no real engine experience (aside from a valve cover gasket and changing my own oil/trans fluids) I love the car.. If it's not feasible what should I do? Because the only place I've called to get a quote said $5k

AWD shitboxes are not the same as AWD race cars though. The race cars have some very complex differentials and electronics to control exactly how much power goes to each wheel in order to control under/oversteer.

I'd say drive it until it dies while saving money for a new ride

>pull into parking spot
>didn't see clear glass bottle
>*POP* *SHATTER*

Is my tire going to be flat when I get off work this evening? :( I just bought new tires earlier this year.

Fucking faggot spoonfeeder's

I'm looking at getting a '99 MR2 to start a project with, shit has 360,000 miles, the paint is fucked and it's been off the road for 3 years

What do I actually need to take into consideration before buying it? Since I plan on rebuilding/replacing most parts it surely doesn't matter if most of the internals are fucked. Rust is one thing I can thing of that I have to avoid since it's mostly impossible to repair, anything else?

Should I lease the Chevy Bolt?

Right now I have a dealer offer for 149 mo with 5998 down 0 security deposit, but I qualify for 4500 dollars worth of rebates from my Electric company. The rebates count towards leases too.

So the left over 6k-4.5k = 1.5k/36 = 42 dollars a month added in cost of leasing leading to 192 a month, but I get free fast charging = 90 miles, any commute in my area, in 30mins saving me 100 dollars gas, I get 28mpg average currently in a piece of shit, so I can be leasing this car for 92~ dollars a month, obviously adding dealer fees is closer to 100.

It sounds good right or am I missing something?

Are there any places out there that give physical cash loans? Like dollar bills?
I'm trying to snag $4000 for a car on Craigslist

Yes they're called payday loans and I highly advise against using them.

The tires are pretty bald already, maybe i'll look around for a wheel / tire combo and install them. The stock wheels are kinda boring. I'll look into the other things you mentioned, coilovers was one thing recommended to me from a friend as well so that's on the list for sure. Thanks!

Really? Y?

I was drunk and felt like spoon-feeding, fuck off

Looking at buying a first car. One is having an issue where it runs and idles fine, but the engineer starts to heat up a shittonne after a short drive.

What are some common causes I should check for? The guy claims he was told it was likely a head gasket, but that smells like he's asked some random friend of his and they said the first thing that popped into their head.

I love this car

So here's a question arising: what cars/makes have good AWD, and which ones are just meme-tier? I know that, for example, a CRV is really just FWD with some rear wheels that tag along from time to time, but a WRX STi has actually decent AWD.

Because they will bend you over and fuck you up the ass. Interest rates and terms on them are spectacularly bad, because they are the final resort for non-creditworthy, poor and economically illiterate people. This means that they have you over a barrel, and they know it.
If you don't know why payday loans are bad, and you need to pick up $4k in cash for a car, you certainly fall into some or all of those categories. Sorry to be so harsh, but taking out a payday loan to buy a car is a monstrously stupid idea.

I wonder how autismal you have to be to design tire tread patterns. I can just imagine some fat gook sperg slaving over his computer perfecting every ridge, bump, and groove.

The best tires are European though

If it overheats after a short drive it's probably a head gasket dude. How bout for your first car you get something without problems. There are a lot of cars out there for sale. Don't buy one with existing problems unless you're willing to dump in an unknown amount of money and time.

Also use google for causes of overheating

Well Subarus and Audis understeer because their engines hang over the front axle. If the weight is centralized then awd is god tier. Think Audi R8

Michelin is the only good euro brand imo. Pirelli and Continental aren't that great.

I should specify I mean that front engine Audis understeer. Notice where the strut towers are compared to the engine. The wheels are behind the engine, that's the only way the Quattro system can work.

For the size he wants there's only Premium Contact 5s. And yes, they're great tyres be it in the wet or dry.

>Michelin is the only good euro brand imo. Pirelli and Continental aren't that great.
The only tyres Michelin makes that are good are PilotSports. Everything else is mediocre and there's better and cheaper alternatives

why do people put new head units in their cars but don't also upgrade the speakers or fit an amp & sub? all it does is make the dash look worse with no discernible change in audio quality

Whats the deal with cometic head gaskets? i see hugely varying reviews on them and am curious whether theyre any good or not

Is 750rpm too low for idle at operating temp? The vehicle is a gas 4 banger economy car that redlines at 6500.

Normal.

Could you guys recommend me some winter tires for my E46, 16"?
My friend form work said go Yokohama, he drives for ~40 years now, so sounds legit.

also I live in Europe

I thought base Ford Focus' had no LSD, but I did a burnout the other day and left two equal length tire tracks. Is it a FWD thing? I've got a 2005 cheapest model possible, manual everything.

redpill me on the honda ridgeline. thinking 2007 model.

What should I know before buying a RX-7 from the 80s?

So i just bought my first brand new car, a 2017 kia forte s.
>Is synthetic oil worth the price for a commuter?
Ill be changing my oil at 5k miles every time.
Ive always used synthetic but this car comes with conventional from the factory.. Opinions?

Rotary specific maintenance. And rx forum will have lots of details.
Its not a truck for hauling heavy shit, but if you use it like a typical american, its not bad.
LSD are mostly in effect with the wheels turned, while driving straight of course it left two tracks.
If youre changing the oil at 5k you absolutley better use syn.
Dino oil degrades before 5k miles.

Bump for opinions

An old corvette isnt going to handle that same as a miata, theres just too much weight.
Look at something smaller
>or turbo a miata

1k miata and a haynes manual

So i have to pass emissions, its a rush.

I own a chevy malibu 2007 inline 4 2.2

I originally had a code p0449, and i replaced the gas cap, vent solenoid, and evap canister.

That code is gone and hasnt come back, but i recently got a p0455
I decided to go back to my old gas cap just in case the new one isnt right for my car.

I erased the code yesterday and ive driven it 4 times and about 20 miles in total.

I dont want to go try to get it smogged and they end up telling me AGAIN that it didn't pass and i waste 70$.

How can i tell if its completely cleared?

I took my wheel in 3 times last week because I kept finding it flat.
This last time when I pkcked it up they just shoved a tube inside the tyre with used to be tubeless.

How does this change my wheel? Do I need it rebalanced? Does it change how it works under stress?

Can Veeky Forums talk to me about wheel alignments? Earlier this year I took my mother's 2010 ford focus into Mavis Discount Tire to get a wheel alignment (prior too in order to drive the car straight the wheel had to be turned more than what is acceptable). They did the alignment, and all was good until now. Basically, I'm getting a repeat of what it was like driving prior to the alignment and it's only been about 3-4 thousand miles put on the car. Is this normal? How often do wheel alignments need to be done? Should front end suspension & steering parts be replaced before getting an alignment? If so, which parts? Thanks.

clear code, drive for 20-30 miles (both highway & street driving), get to the shop and do not leave until they scan it.

Also, why the fuck are you paying prior to getting passed? Sounds like you are getting ripped off.

I'm looking for a good set of tires for my 2014 charger SXT. 245's R20

Whats the best way to sell used auto parts?

I'm parting out my car and I have a rare high quality set of headlights Id like to sell off for maximum profit. I have only sold things through Craigslist but I doubt anyone in my area would want or have the funds to buy them.

I am thinking ebay, but how does pricing work to post things? is it better to auction or sell? are there better methods?

what is the real life equivalent to stan smith's SUV?

What's more reliable and longer-lasting, 90s - early 00s Honda or Toyota?

Anyone here familiar with Porsche/Audi transaxles? We're talking 5 speed here.

Any idea what this bolt is? Because it's not the filler bolt and it was loose on my car.

Pic related is the fill plug, it's on the other side of the transmission

It's a Pilot with a bed. Pretty nice actually

I've seen people throw on lift kits, skid plates, and some off road tires and easily keep up with Wranglers and such in a Fridgeline
