Car Audi/o/

Can anyone recommend a stereo to upgrade to, and anything else I should fdo while I'm at it? I have a 2001 civic which can take either single or double DIN, and probably only want to spend about 300 bucks, but could go for more if necessary. Are there any brands that suck shit?

I just use this user, it works fine in my Miata

Just don't be that dickhead who tries to sell their car with one of these though, keep the stock one

>Are there any brands that suck shit?
avoid BOSS and similar chink brands and you'll be fine

>$40 on a second hand quality unit
>$150 for a second hand 5 channel amp
>$60 on second hand sub
>$50 on wiring

Wala

The *ONLY* aftermarket deck in that price range that is better than your stock deck is the Pioneer DEH-80PRS.

Everything else sucks a bag of dicks in that price range, even the Alpines.

Bring your car into the modern age OP get yourself a joying android headunit.
You get the functionality of a tablet that can connect to your car as well as all the usual stuff

No fucking way on Earth you're getting an Android HU that's worth a flying fuck for $300. You'd have to spend double that to even begin, and even then, those suck.

If you like absolute garbage audio quality from your piece of shit, buggy, Android tablet masquerading as a car stereo.

Really? I was under the impression that literally anything was better than the stock stereo head. I currently use a cigarette lighter bluetooth -> FM transmitter and I think the sound just sucks because I have to go through FM rather than just straight into the unit.

>FM transmitter

Found your sound quality problem right there.

Honda stereos are, and have always been, made by Alpine. 2001 was right in Alpine's heyday of being the best of the best. There's nothing wrong with your deck, what's wrong is your shitty FM modulator.

Because your car had an optional CD changer, you can get an AUX in harness for your factory deck. That would increase the sound quality immensely. Blitz-Safe makes one for sure, maybe other people do as well.

blitzsafe.com/catalog/hon-/-aux-dmx-v-2x.html

>Really? I was under the impression that literally anything was better than the stock stereo head
in most cars that's true and I would disagree with OP. I replaced the unit in my camry several years ago (2002 Camry LE, stock sound, no upgraded speakers) and it sounded better with a kenwood dpx500bt

that being said the tilt of the headunit (facing up / angled toward rooftop, not straight 90 degrees in panel) made it a bitch in the sun. If I could do my decision over I would go for a single or double DIN pioneer HU.

>tfw Mazda Connect can easily be hacked to add Android Auto and Mazda doesn't care to patch it out

keep the stock radio and get an aux adapter that plugs in where the cd changer did on the back of the radio. then flush mount it for maximum oem-ness

Really only works with radios that came with CD changers. With older Becker units you still need the CD changers there to send the right signals while replacing the actual audio lines

That's why you simply get the "mystery" box that fools the factory HU into thinking the CD changer is actually there.

It's normally just a resistance check or a 5v signal. You can either get a 12v to 5v converter to send a signal to that pin or bridge 2 pins with a resistor (that's what I did on my Blaupunkt)

OH SHIT! Which Blaupunkt is that? An old Tucson? I had a Denver that I gave to a good friend of mine that has a classic Camaro where he didn't want to cut the dash. Those old decks were SWEET.

I should have just done something like this instead of being a retard and wiring an AUX input directly to the amp

The problem with going directly to an amp is, no preamp control.

Now, you can get a preamp (an Audiocontrol Three.2 for example) and alleviate this, and it's actually a good idea. You get a useable volume control knob that way, plus the voltage coming out of your phone goes from 0.25V to 6V. That lets you turn the gain control down on the amp, increasing sound quality dramatically vs just being driven by the phone itself. The only problem there is, a good preamp costs twice as much as the mystery box does.

I have a similar model to this in my 99 accord.

Absolutely shits all over the stock HU. People telling OP to keep the stock stereo are stupid. Stock stereo has no AUX, no BT, and if it's anything like my accord it cannot even read burned CDs nevermind play MP3s.

There are so many things to tune on the stereo to get better sound ontop of it just flat out sounding massively better than the stock unit. Being able to adjust the high-pass filter so the doors don't rattle at high volumes is reason enough. You can adjust and tone down the colors to match your interior as well.

Get double-din OP, you already have enough storage pockets and the bigger buttons / volume knob and all that shit are nicer for driving.

Do not get anything touchscreen because it's fucking retarded.

My setup is just so janky right now, I think I'll just go back to using the radio and get that Yatour box to add AUX, maybe upgrade the speakers

>Only want to spend about 300 bucks
ITT: OP Wants to spend more on a stereo than his car is worth.

Why does every head unit looks like transformer made for 14yo edgy teens.

because every HU is made for edgy fuckers in their civics

sony.com/electronics/in-car-receivers-players/xav-ax100

It's 450 USD and breddy gud.

Since we are on the subject of car audio, why should I not get a powered underseat subwoofer like pic related?

I don't want to shake the cars next to me. I don't want to be heard from three blocks away. I just want a little bit better bottom end.

Oops, forgot pic.

>stock stereo has no AUX

Yes it does.

>Bluetooth

That's only good for listening to phone calls. Anybody who is listening to music via Bluetooth has ZERO right to be telling anyone about sound quality. Bluetooth was made for printers, mice, and phonecalls. Yes, I know about aptx, it still sounds like absolute fucking shit. If you can't tell the difference between a real CD and bluetooth, your stereo is pure, unadulterated shit, and therefore, there's NOTHING wrong with stock.

Bluetooth 4.1 has a fuckload more bandwidth, much lower latency, and barely uses any power. Stop using chink speakers with bluetooth 2.0

Bluetooth 4.1 has a sustained real world throughput under 200kbps. A CD has a throughput of 1,411kbps.

Any idiot can see that a CD blows bluetooth out of the water, and CD isn't even the best, that would be SACD (DSD). SACD was invented because CD wasn't the end-all be-all that Sony and Philips thought it would be back when it was invented in 1982.

Bluetooth 5 has a throughput of 2mbps

CDs BTFO

>dead standards

CDs are also uncompressed and the loudness wars have lead to a death in actual mastering of CDs to take advantage of the full fidelity since basically the mid-90s. What's your point here?

>all of this autism over audio quality in a car
>probably drives a $300 rattlebox Civic

Max theoretical rate of 2mpbs. Not sustained real world.

Paper speeds and real world speeds are two different things, my nigger.

Don't you have a headphone thread to shot up on /g/?

Stay BTFO

I only buy original pressings of CD's for use in the car or vinyl for the house, not "remastered" bullshit.

So, what we have here is
>compressed at engineering new music and recrapstered older music
>compressed more with mp3
>compressed even more with Bluetooth

If you do away with the horsehshit mp3 and Bluetooth, at least you have some semblance of a chance of not killing your ears.

Tell you what: on a mid range, mass market home stereo, nothing even that fancy, do this experiment:

Get an original LP of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours
Get an original CD of Rumours
Download an iTunes mp3 of Rumours on an iPod run through a dock
Rumors on the iPod via Bluetooth

Now, listen to all 4. If you can't hear the difference between all 4 formats, you're deaf as a post.

Nope, I haven't been on /g/ in like years.

Don't forget cable risers by coconut audio

If I upgrade my car's head unit will I get better radio signal? If not how can I improve it?

>he doesn't hire the band to play live music

You're confusing me with one of those fucknuts.

There is a difference between *formats* and mathematics can prove that. There's no fucking difference between $15,000 speaker wires and 50ยข worth of copper lamp cord. Electrons are electrons, copper is copper.

No, but I do go to a lot of bars and concerts to listen to live music. I used Rocksmith on my Xbox to teach myself to play the bass really, really shittily, too.

I do love music.

Music in a $300 Civic is gonna sound like shit regardless of format. What's your point?

Assuming I'm using non-shit equipment it's all about equal. I'm sure you're going to lecture me on the quality and warmth of LP sounds, but taking an MP3 through iTunes vs. using a 256/320kbps CBR MP3 or V0/V2 VBR vs. lossless audio compression vs. CD. The equipment matters more, particularly the DAC. And the DAC as a line out from a lot of cellular phones is utter fucking dogshit.

By the way I can hear the difference between lower bitrates and MP3 320 CBR but lossless is not an even split, it depends on the music. At the point at which I'm doing so I'm eyes closed trying to tell the difference between music rather than enjoying it. Lossless has technical merit as well as preservation/use in commercial production but practically day to day with all the cognitive load of driving a car, it will make zero difference.

>particularly the DAC
On that we agree.

All this FLAC tier autism when OP is going to be using the stock papercone speakers in a wind-noisey rattling shitbox.

> joying
Joying is really nice. Have one with 8 inch in my Nissan Almera

It's a Wiesbaden. I got something really cool to accompany it I'll post it in a bit

Pls respond

Usually your stock antenna plugs into your aftermarket radio. It's possible though.

The absolute best tuners ever put into a car radio was the Schotz II tuners in the old Proton decks. Those haven't been made in probably 30 years though.

Next best would be the Pioneer SuperTuner III's. I'm pretty sure the aforementioned DEH-80PRS has that tuner.

So if I upgrade my head unit all I need is an extra tuner?

The tuner is built in to what ever HU you choose. Just know that some decks have much better tuners than others. Again, Proton, best ever. Pioneer, second place.

if you want a decent source for AUX in at the budget- older iPods / Sansa Clip+.
At slightly higher budget- stuff from Fiio

These probably cost around a 6-pack of beer used in US, and provide a DAC good enough for it not to be the weak point.

It's pointless because the entire fucking car is a weak point unless you're in an S Class which straight up isolates you from outside road noise

Actually, no.
Even the "more less not shitty" setup i had in a goddamn miata could produce a difference between my phone and the sansa i use.
Seriously- mobile phone DAC are horrible.
Of course not while doing 100mph on highway, but on a slow chill ride at night- noticeable.

>discernible difference from DACs in a fucking convertible
Now this is peak autism

Was planning on getting a nice double din with some nice features. It should have better radio signal if it's a much newer unit right?

Not necessarily. Cheap shit decks have cheap shit tuners.

>Inexpensive (Double DIN
>Quality

You may pick only 2

With phone plugged in the tweeters didn't even play anything and turning up bass didn't produce much more of it.
I'm not talking about masturbating to a 10000$ of headphones.
I'm talking about phone DAC that's not even able to reproduce MP3 quality on AUX line properly.

OEM everything, especially head unit are the cheapest shit possible. I've never seen an econobox without a laggy digital head unit.

Stop buying chink phones

No way, looked at some nice ones like this I don't need GPS since I only use Google maps, is this bad unit?
>www1.crutchfield.com/p_130290BT/Pioneer-MVH-AV290BT.html?tp=20217

You already have low standards, clearly, so go for it.

Low standards for what? Explain yourself edgelord.

It doesn't even have a CD player in it? WTF?

Yes, that's absolutely a piece of shit.

I only use radio and Bluetooth, I don't need CD

>Buzzwords
Not only low standards, but low test as well.

Maybe Reddit is more your speed, kiddo.

Who the fuck uses CDs? Even vinyls are out selling them

Anybody who cares enough about sound quality to bother changing their stock stereo to an aftermarket unit.

If you don't care about sound quality, keep your stock stereo.

Weapons grade autism. The poor sound isolation in your car is going to make the money you spend in your shitbox's audio system pointless

>I only use radio and Bluetooth,
Then you don't need an aftermarket deck.

So keep your stock deck and speakers, and save a wad of cash. Done and done.

I want better radio signal, my head unit is over 12 years old with no aux, Bluetooth or nothing, I'm hoping I'd get better radio signal too

Then get the DEH-80PRS. It's quite literally the only

I never said that he should keep *using* the stock one, but he shouldn't sell the car with the new one in there because honestly nobody wants that shit

Radio sensitivity is given in decibel-femtowatts (DbF) and the lower the better. However the most sensitive radio can't do shit if the antenna arrangement isn't worth a damn and most cars aren't anymore (if ever). If you're car doesn't at least have a dedicated stand-alone aerial then you're probably wasting your time.

>Doing any sort of audio upgrade
>Without first sound deadening
o i am laffin'.

>Sound deadening a convertible

Get a joying head unit, they're Chinese but they work really well. They also look really factory because they're not shiny and covered in disgusting led neons. They're pretty much just an android phone but with a built in radio receiver. If it works in your country you can get a digital receiver which is the shit for clear crisp audio. They also have a plugin for a dashcam and reverse camera. Hell watch youtube and netflix while you drive. They're the shit.

>Owning a convertible
Women aren't allowed on this board.

i spend 2 hours/day in this thing and plan on just putting the old unit back in and removing my nicer speakers when I'm ready to sell it/wrap it around a tree

nobody said I can't keep the head unit for another car

w2c?

>being an insecure dicklet

not op

im literally retarded with android/apple products and software

do you connect these to your phone to access the internet/maps?

Can it, Stacy. Your vagina has no power here.

>Criticizing buzzwords with buzzwords

This is peak dunning-kruger!

>!

Like he said, back to Red.dit. You reek of cancer.

most have built in wifi so to update and download songs etc just connect at home. If you want maps on the road you can connect to your phones hotspot but even then google maps now does offline stuff.

So just download everything you want at home and use your phones hotspot in emergencies

get a pioneer or maybe an alpine
kenwood used to be decent but i don't know much about them anymore

Better than stale Cheetos and body odor, but you probably are used to the smell.

>why should I not get a powered underseat subwoofer like pic related?

it'll be disappointing
for the $300 you'd waste on that you could get a 10" rockford fosgate sub and amp to power it which would sound infinitely better

>people still using bluejunk

Sure, it's junk today, but when that deck was made, Blaupunkt was absolutely top of the line.

Blaupunkt, Denon, Alpine, Harmon Kardon, Concord, Soundstream, and Nakamichi were all best of the best of the best when it came to head units.

>they're Chinese

I have an 07 Colorado I want to get a new head unit for, but they all look like pure fucking cancer like this one Is there a decent looking one out there that looks reasonable? Preferably close to the stock unit

Without spending >$1000? Not really. (pic related)

What is it that your stock headunit doesn't do that you want it to?

CD got stuck in it and can't get it out, it's pretty fucked. I basically resort to Sirius XM or NPR for radio, but I want to play my own music.

I looked into getting an AUX cable in there but there aren't any adapters that work with my unit w/o it being a giant pain in the ass.
