You can attach a $5 Casio to the handlebars or stick it on the dash. Nobody needs a fuel gauge when you have a tripmeter.
My bike has both a clock and a fuel gauge, neither are very accurate.
Got the FCR carb on the old XR600 and took it for a ride on the weekend.
Holy fuck, it was fairly quick before but does 3rd gear power wheelies like it's no big thing now.

Anyone got experience with large windscreens on nakeds?
I would love a cb1100 or xjr1300 for all weather touring but most screens on the market are like 8 inches high with nothing to cover legs.

I'll admit it's a good-looking bike, and maybe it's a good beginner bike. However, with the price of them and how shiny they are, it'd be a shame if you dropped or crashed one -- which beginners tend to do. Therefore, the GS 500 is actually the better (best) beginner bike.
