How bad actually is the Homunculus you can craft as an Alchemist?
I have an Alch2 I'm leveling right now and was wondering if I should base my first 5 ranks on it and do something like Pyro1 Link3 Alch3 just to make Homunculi with maxed Joint Penalty.
Do they use skills even remotely on cooldown?
Or should I just pick circles that I feel would help me solo at least a little bit on my alchemist?

Barbarian, 3 overheat skill that gives+50 crit rate (more if you do the running Barb buff) and also does a slash debuff to enemies.

Dex is just attack speed and people are feeling like it has a softcap, so definitely not worth investing much into if at all anymore. Go for STR mainly, some dex, maybe con.

Experiment with the resets, and take this vid with a grain of salt since they have +15 Lolopanther Rapier.

The only reason you go Ranger is for Steady Aim which is a shitter version than Running Shot. None of the Ranger damage skills matter at all late game. You go Ranger so that your Schwarzer skills can damage more

Link is now a coordination based class for stat buffs and selective damage amp, no longer just a universal damage multiplier you can slap onto any build.

Even as SR3 Bounce Shot and Spiral Arrow remain relevant. Bounce Shot for a quick AoE Burst and Spiral Arrow on single targets. There's literally no reason not to use them other than not wanting to do the most possible DPS.
