The actual status is that Atlus is not saying shit like always.
And that clinging to the hope that E3 will bring anything is futile and desperate.

Series is dead in NA and very likely also in JP.

They haven't acknowledged the series since EO2U was released.

There have been absolutely no announcements, and it's been uncomfortably close to a year since EO5 released, and close to 2 years since EO2U was localized.

I suspect EO will do fine in Japan—there's still a spinoff that hasn't come out yet—but localization odds are looking grim.

No translation, not a word about localization at all since the game has been released.

What's that about?

Translated the game is doable, putting said translation back into the game itself to make a playable release is not.

And why?

No one has figured out how to re-encrypt it.
Currently the game can be decrypted and changed just fine - but trying to play it without re-encrypting it gives you single digit framerates in the dungeon and multi-second lags every time a voice line loads.

So by all reasonable definitions its unplayable and no one would be willing to put in the work to put in the work for a fan translation as long as the result is bound to be complete shit.

I wonder if this is the reason why Atlus is not doing the localization. Maybe they have the same problems that piratefags do.

I'm aware, but I have no idea how is that process.

The company that made the game's original encryption is not going to spontaneously forget how to encrypt the game.

No idea bout consoles but in case of PCs, publishers often announce if they are going to abandon plans for porting games and such.

The Switch has no practical way of replicating the DS's second screen, which is essential for Etrian Odyssey. Thus, there are only four options:

>1. Etrian Odyssey dies a pitiful death.
>2. Etrian Odyssey continues a hollow shell of its former self, without any cartographic gameplay.
>3. Etrian Mystery Dungeon becomes the new mainline.
>4. Hardcore Etrian Odyssey, which comes bundled with a pad of graph paper and a pencil (unsharpened).

They could do splitscreen, and bundle with a stylus.

I couldn't see HD EO on a TV being a thing anyway.
If they were to develop for the Switch, it would be one of the games that fall into the tablet only gameplay category. There could be a little drop-down menu icon in the corner of the screen that opens the map, like how I imagine the Vita crawlers manage it.
To me this isn't a bad thing. I just hope they find a way to continue the franchise despite the less convenient hardware.

Thatsnot exactly "hollow shell". In EO, map drawing is only one of the features. If they would still provide good gameplay and mechanics, I would accept that.

I would dearly miss map making.
But not as much as having a dungeon crawler with actual good skill trees.
Something like Unchained Blades is just horrible and most crawlers that are closer to Wizardry only give non-magic units only a handful of skills.

Why wouldn't it be map in corner, press button to bring up map edit and map in short bursts.

I just don't want to go back to automaps.

In my EO-deprived state I went and checked out a couple of other dungeon crawlers and having decent customization seems to be an arcane skill to their devs.
