Toss up between Cerebella and Valentine. Cerebella has strong, far reaching normals you can just mash even if you have never played fighting games. Valentine has multi-hit normals that chain super easy into other normals that also multi-hit so it can fool newbies into thinking they just performed a combo. Filia or Fukua if it's a player that has just come from Street Fighter.

So I've been playing the game for a while. Mainly been playing alone ever since I moved, since nobody where I'm currently at plays fighting games and my internet is absolute garbage. I can only play Squigly somewhat competently, and that's due to muscle memory helping out with most of her combos. I wanna try learning other characters, but they all seem really alien to me and it's really difficult to get into them. How do I get around playing the other characters in the first place?

just gotta try em out. go through their tutorial. play through their story mode, and do some runs of arcade mode with them. squigly's kind of tricky to be good with, so if you're skilled with her you'll probably get used to one of the other characters quicker than you think.

You buffer the charge during the more lengthy normals.

charging starts as soon as you begin holding the direction, regardless of whatever else your character's doing. during combos you start holding the direction while you're pushing other buttons, so you can have it held for the 1-second or so needed to then "release" the charge at a certain point and do the special move in your combo.
keep in mind you're actually charging when you block too. so when you're holding down+back that actually counts as charging both down and back,
you can also start a charge while you're in mid-air, or even getting hit. you just have to make sure you "release" at a point where you're in control of the character. that's how parasouls can do reversal napalm pillar when their opponent tries to reset them in a combo.
