If HoI IV is the most dumbed down and casualised, I think it's the game for me, just cbf learning how to play 2 again, n9 time and no will, but still want a bit of the action.

i absolutely do not understand the battle mechanics of this game, in the tutorial you just roll over ethiopia no problem, but when you fight an actually equipped opponent, i dont know what to do, as france my units just sit there fighting till they give in and i instantly collapse, im used to the defeat/retreat mechanics of EU4, but here i dont get the larger flow of winning/losing and i dont know how fast i want the speed to go to observe a battle

There's a lot of things that go into it. Like all paradox games, it's simultaneously simple but complex. In all likelihood, your division comp is fucked and your supply is messed the fuck up too. Italy isn't a very good tutorial nation after you fuck up Ethiopia as they have a 5 front fight ahead of them (France, Yugo, Greece, trying to take the Suez, trying to take Gibraltar, mostly at the same time). Try playing as Germany with historical focus on. Just follow the historical path and you'll learn the game pretty quickly.

I think Ho4 has the framework to be the best HoI game in about a million patches and expansions, if not mods. There way things fundamentally work is just better than 2 or 3.

Except everything goes full retardo every single time. If you want to find out what would happen if the Western Allies declared war on the Soviet Union in 1943 because the Neo-Assyrian Empire joined the Comintern, it's good for 'dicking around with history'.

At the same time, despite all this pants on head retarded bullshit happening, everything feels tremendously boring and samey, and if you play anyone but the major powers and poland, expect to be bored to tears.

It's shit. Easy as fuck, ahistorical as possible, ugly map. I still played it like 200 hours, but that's just because I'm a grand strategy autist.

Wait a few years, pirate all the DLC's, install the best mods that will have come out, and then it will be a decent game. Play Victoria 2 while waiting for it.

The problem with HoI is that it is just so utterly bland and generic (outside a handful of choices as the biggest powers). Not as much as later 2 variants/3 but still a lot.

The historical AI always gets the commies in war with the democrats., which bothers me.
On the other hand, when I play as Russia, its very easy to turn France into a communist state, and smash Germany.

Anyway, its a shallow game, there isn't much to do. Should've had more simulation of the population and politics, like Victoria did.
Also, I know its historical, but gameplay wise its an issue that only nations which start with a big fleet ever have a chance of winning naval conflicts. The game simply doesn't last enough for a non-naval power to ever achieve naval supremacy, because you can't capture ships.

My favorite game is uniting the horn of Africa as Ethiopia, as a coptic christian state, and fighting the Ottomans in Egypt.

Older ships are nearly useless compared to new ones so even a small production advantage can become decisive faster than you might think. And it really isn't hard to get a 4:1 advantage over the UK or even the US if you just blob enough

Strong ships take a year or more to build, the game lasts 20 years.
And as pretty much anyone other than Britain you will be lacking rubber.

It's easy to construct a war-winning fleet as Germany or the Soviet Union within three or four years, so there's plenty of time. Weaker powers take only slightly longer

I liked playing Communist China in HoI2. Beat up Nationalists from the west while Japs were taking the coast, then pushed the Japs out of mainland all the way to Korea. Then it's already late 1941 and Hitler is closing in on Moscow, time to join Comintern. 150 odd chink divisions redeployed around Moscow with hardened veterans and HQs. Too bad the save got corrupted and later lost.

Personally I'd like to see more leaders and portraits/flags in HOI4. There are some good ones, but for a lot of minor nations they just get generic portraits once you go red or brown.

Some of the alternate flags are radical though, especially the fascist Scandinavian ones.

Alright, can we put the memes aside for a moment and all agree that, for what it set out to do, HoI4 is a success? It gave us a WWII grandstrat free from all the archaic bullshit of Darkest Hour, and also much easier to get into then HoI3. Can anyone here honestly say they enjoy wasting an hour to fix their OoB every time they start a game of HoI3? Not to mention that, rather than needing to tediously micromanage industry like in other HoI games, HoI4's industry is both streamlined as well as more intuitive than the previous games. Yeah, it's true that HoI4 leads to more "ahistorical" scenarios, but isn't that the point? Why even bother playing the game if the outcome is predetermined form the start? Moreover, from a pure gameplay perspective, giving the player more options, whether they be historical or ahistorical, is a total success. Sure, Mosley ruling Britain never could have happened in reality, but it's fun to have the ability to easily do so in video game form.
Overall, I feel that HoI4 is getting a lot of undeserved hate simply because it isn't a total copy of HoI3 with slightly better graphics. Of COURSE the game is different - HoI3 already exists, there would be no point to making the same game again! HoI4 may be different, but that's by design, not by some unforeseen flaw, and it should be celebrated for the changes it made, not hated on.

Tbqh HoI4 has two major failings for me as of right now. Since they took out most of the events, or at least the player's ability to be notified of them as they happen, the world feels empty. For the most part, 1936-1939 might as well not happen for a minor considering the fuck-all you'd see happen during it while you change out national focuses.

Second, there really isn't much alt-history you can do with the Axis. France and Britain you can make freak out and make go fascist or communist, but Italy and Germany are more or less locked into starting WW2 as the aggressors with no real way to affect political change without intentionally losing a war. The only real bits of alt-history you can do is choosing who to invade first or who to invade that you didn't in real life. I'd expect Italy at least to have a path to let it join up with the Allies to play out a hypothetical continuation of Mussolini's and Hitler's opposition. Japan is its own little pocket of fucked up since its focuses do literally lock it into starting a war in the Pacific and nothing else.

It's a good game otherwise, but those two things need to be fixed to make it really come into its own.

HOI4 is only really challenging in single player.

I've won against the axis as Britain with 49% contribution without any use of an airforce and only use of a navy for naval invasions to France from England.

I've done what I posted in by fucking 1946.

Once you learn the basic mechanics it's just too easy to steamroll the AI once they get predeictable.

HoI4 is fucking shit. The AI is retarded and can't even supply itself. Even on the hardest difficulty it's piss easy. I frequently worry for my enemies when playing this game, that's how bad it is.

Also it's anything but historical. Enjoy Greek troops capturing Berlin and getting their own half of Germany at the Peace conference. Oh but not before Britain puppets West Germany and the US puppets East Germany, and the Soviet Union conquers Japan and creates a puppet state in Sicily, lol so random!! Thanks Paradox, this is epic!

Seriously don't buy HoI4. It suffers from Paradox syndrome of the worst degree, by which I mean it plays like an early access game and requires mods to be functional. Except it's not even at that level, even with mods it still sucks.

Play HoI3 with BlackICE instead, or Darkest Hour if you want a WW2 game. If you want a good Paradox grand strat play Victoria 2 with HPM or EU4 with Meiou&Taxes. Pirate the DLC.
