If you liked Shadows of Valentia/Gaiden and Thracia 776, then you should check out TearRing Saga.

TearRing Saga has the overworld map style of Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia by having dual protagonists and a world map where you control both characters as well as having the occasional enemy attack you on the map.

It also Thracia style map design, complete with it's share of occasional bullshit. The maps are varied in design and have lots of neat things.

The story (which FE7 totally ripped off) also features excellent villains with believable goals and huge cast of characters that all get their screentime which provides both character development as well as be relevant to the main plot.

Also, the sprite work is godlike.

to be fair, the writing is one of the worst I have seen in a video game. Not so much a nitpick but can't blame people for losing all enthusiasm to play when a cut scene hits. I have seen good story save games with bad/mediocore game play but never have seen writing drag a game with great game play down. Glad it came to to simply marveal at such a thing happen.

Game is 20x better if you skip all the cut scenes truly astounding.

But the maps are far from boring in my opinion unless you hate big ones. There's often a variety of things to do and strategies to try so you need to stay alert.
