If people would watch the first season of Initial D closely they would realise even back then the AE86 was a literal shitbox ( Itsuki dreams about buying one for around $3000) and Takumi gets ridiculed for racing in one in the earlier races (for example Takahashi Brothers, "my Dorito can't lose against a shitty econbox!" or Mr "Likes to drive his GT-R into the guard rail" Nakazato)
Also most of Takumis win are not because his car is a beast or anything, it's just a combination of his perfect drift skills on akina and some asspull to get a last second lead.
The AE86 was just a sporty RWD DOHC shitbox back then and thus a favorite for poor racers and teenagers.

It behaves kinda normal somewhere up to 110km/h, after that and it will go faster no problem whole softtop starts to bubble up, wild shakes front to rear begin over smallest road imperfections and every time that happens you lose steering for a moment.
