Tried out arena PvP for the first time, realized that rated PvP has a greater barrier for entry than raiding, and that casual rewards you with fuck all.

Good question. I just like having one and was to lazy to set up a guild tabard. Also STILL no Dark Iron Tabard, so no real choice.
Arena atm is pretty "bad", but that is probably nostalgia speaking. Its alot of stuff to learn and get used to for a beginner. You will get there eventually if you keep learning and improving!

I'm not so much concerned with improving or learning it so much as you have to queue as a premade, but getting into a premade requires you to have a rank.. from already playing as a premade.

So a total catch 22 unless you luck out and find someone willing to carry someone which seems unlikely.

Almost all the specs are within single digit %s of one another, and more than viable in a raiding environment. So no, it doesn't affect most people that only ever plan on raiding normal, heroic or just plain LFR heroes.

For Mythic NH in 7.1.5, the worst spec in the game (Balance) was within 10% of the best spec in the game (FDK).

19 specs were within 5% of each other.

So yes, they really fucking were within a single digit percentage.

literally entirely depends on the percentile you're looking at. And no matter what, a couple of specs (frost mage and affli) dominate at all levels.

Unless your Unholy Artifact is grossly more filled up than your Frost, you're going to feel the difference between them.

Same with other classrs and specs, Enhaman actively feels more fragile than other classes, Spriest takes longer to kill things, Arms feels much weaker than Fury and Feral sucks all around.

Everything is 'viable' for 99% of the content, but you can certainly feel the differences in strength between the classes.

What's a spec you would be very impressed if someone did really well with.
