Yes, they are absolutely right. Games like SF2, 3rd Strike or Alpha 2 were never fun since they didn't have unlockables. Real fun games were the Mortal Kombat series with a ton of mini games and easter eggs to distract you from the boring "fighting against an opponent" part of the game no one but autists care about.

The problem is that you have to cater to two different audiences. The competetive players obviously want all the characters right from the start, casuals enjoy the feeling of being rewarded by unlocking stuff. I think having unlockable costumes is the middle ground that shouldn't offend anyone.
