I played during the beta and shortly after because I loved that the game was full of cheesy gimmicks that could actually win games as opposed to other mobas but my friends stopped playing so I left. I wanted to come back but someone told me that they nerfed virtually all cheese to the ground. Can anyone elaborate on that?

No shit, none of what you listed is even "cheese", it's just normal dota. You don't even know what you are talking about. No, dagon is not removed. No, refresher is not removed. Yes, stunts still exist and you can pick multiple "characters" with stuns. Yes, heroes with invisibility are still in the game and yes, they can be picked in a team with dark seer.
