it's a dumb """fix""" since version 1.11 or so of 1257 where the defending AI will always use their bows even in melee range and the attacking AI can't shoot anymore for some reason
if you just tell your archers to fire at my command use melee then fire at will use ranged they'll shoot properly

Story mode is cool to do once or twice, twice if you do a different character and make different choices, but outside of that it's pointless. By the time you finish the campaign factions territory has shifted dramatically, some factions are nearly eliminated, all lords/vassals have shitty relations with one another, you end up with a sub-optimal companion build, and more than likely a sub-optimal character build as well...

Nova Aetas, but you need to use cheats to properly get into it and set up a scenario of sorts to play out, otherwise you'll be spending hours chopping trees and clicking a button to go to work, even after attaining some degree of aristocracy.
