How do I decide on a main?

So, I come from 2D (anime) FGs with minimal 3D experience.

1. I believe 3D "mids" are like 2D "lows", and 3D "lows" are like 2D "overheads". So I then think combos from low starters are luxuries, right? Is there a female character with really good low starting combos? Midscreen and non-ch that leads to meterless 1/3 health combos, or something. I don't want to pick a character that has to do a lot of work for my first real 3D FG.

2. I had a friend that was learning VF5 with me, and he used a character that had a

>low profile
>low hitting
>negative on block, but safe
>positive on hit
>spammable, because of the above
move, and it seemed to devolve the mindgame around it. You can't block and make use of your frame advantage with highs or lows, since he'd just low profile it with the same attack. Mids would get CH by it, because they're slower startup than it.

That's an abnormal situation, isn't it? It seemed to body people that I thought would be decent at 3D FGs, but it seemed like they never realized the game could be played that way.
