My first experience with Sega was the trackball Sonic arcade game (SegaSonic the Hedgehog), followed by Sonic the Fighters. When I joined the company, I was scolded for calling the rings "coins."

If he was a Mary Sue, then none of his actions would have been presented in a negative light, and he would have never lost any fight ever. He would have been completely perfect and everyone would have liked him, which was never, ever the case. There is no character who fits the definition of a mary sue that I can think of.

I don't know, I was more or less just clarifying what type of sue you were supposed to be arguing about.
Your very article contradicts you.

Scourge gets his ass handed to him numerous times, and any powerups he gets, including the Anarchy Beryl and his own super state, are only for the purpose of making him a more credible villain for Sonic to take down.
Same with Eggman. Even in the comics he's taken down tons of times and him being more and more evil and powerful is just escalation so Sonic can keep beating him up without straining credibility.
I'm not the guy you were arguing with, I was trying to get the argument away from what a mary sue is, since there's a lot of different kinds of characters that bad writing can create.

A Mary Sue is seemingly perfect, everyone wants to be their friend and/or fears them depending on whether they're good or bad, their flaws if they have any are irrelevant to the story and only exist for flavor, and they take any kind of tension away because it's obvious they'll win regardless.
The only thing remotely close to a Mary Sue in any aspect of the franchise is Sonic himself and he doesn't count because he's the player character, and that's not including stories where he actually does need to rely on his friends to help him somehow.
I wasn't originally involved in this argument, but I'll post a real villain sue so people have an idea of what one looks like
This is Harvest. I'd classify him as a villain sue because

Although he did have ONE win, once. His plan went perfectly in Sonic Riders... even if it turned out that what he was searching for was nearly worthless.

Honestly, the worst thing I can think of is my time on Deviantart as a kid, mainly because of how it effected me and my stance on shipping as a whole.
Back when I was into shipping, I primarily shipped Sonally, which, of course, was gonna get you shit from Sonamy people. So I decided to lurk around for months or years, seeing all the flame wars and arguments about who is more suited for Sonic and why. Arguments ranged from personality to appearances to the color of character's fur to age, and so much more. I had a hate boner for Amy and all things Sonamy, witnessing all those dumb "girl next door" music videos that people used to make that always portrayed Sally as the bitch and whatnot, while laughing at videos and art that portrayed Amy as an annoying, raging crybaby, since that's all I saw her as.
Then one day, maybe a few years later or whatever, I came to a realization. I realized that both sides of this war were kind of doing the exact same thing. Both had all sorts of propaganda stickers and hate groups. And the worst part of it was that Sally and Amy actually got along in the comics. In fact, her comic incarnation made me like Amy as a whole far more than her Game version or Sonic X version. And then I realized that I liked both Amy and Sally as characters, and that all this mudslinging and trying to bring others down over who should be with who was pointless. Both ships had good chemistry to me, even though I still prefer Sonally or Sonaze to Sonamy.
The attitudes of these people I had witnessed all this time turned me away from shipping for the most part, and I decided not to participate or care about who ended up with who, as long as it made sense and worked.
So yeah, the Sonic fandom is the sole reason I stopped shipping or interacting with shipping, and I haven't turned back since. Not that other fandoms are any better with it.
