He's right though, it starts up slow but is fun with stronger weapons. Only issue is there's no real "ending" to it beyond having everything you want. It's essentially a sandbox game that's slowly getting story elements added via updates.

I don't know how people can handle playing anything but frontliner in this game.
No matter how bad the odds are or how badly it seems like you're going to lose, you can still rally it into a win.
You can hold every point into a draw, figure out which dudes are most dangerous and how they play, and then just when they think it's an easy win and start playing dangerous a fucking Inara or Ruckus comes out of nowhere and sits on their faces.
Even if your team has subhuman IQs, you can usually stall the match long enough to prepare the monkeys for one trick to win the final point.

Androxus is the best flank because of his mobility in any direction and because of him countering Drogoz, one of the most powerful, borderline broken, damage dealers with his gliding. Lex is ground-bound and while not horrible, is kind of a downgrade from Androxus.

If you take Andy run a loadout like this, its pretty much the gold standard.

Well, you're not wrong. At higher levels of play, Andro is capable of much more than Lex is simply on account of having a more complete kit. That said, it's not really something you need to worry about at this stage - by the time the difference in skill ceiling between Andro and Lex becomes relevant, you'll have long since unlocked the entire roster.
For now, if you're drawn to Lex you should buy him. He's definitely a capable of holding his own relative to other champs, and sees plenty of tournament level play these days. Also, Lex makes a good introduction to Flanks for a new player, because he's probably the easiest to just pick up and play. The only issue is that he's one of those champs with "one card syndrome", where a single one of his legendaries is great and the other two are utter crap - and naturally, it's not the default.

I went ahead and got androxus, because fuck it, he appeals to my mcree/genji skill set. Just finished the first game, got best flank. Still lost, of course, because absolutely no-one played the objective.
First impression in-game is that the instant reload using nether step is flipping OP (I killed the opposing androxus just by outgunning him ). Otherwise, seems very fun to play.
That being said, fuck playing flank. It means requiring your team to play the objective when you damn well know that they won't.
At least Makoa never lets me down.

This was one of the hardest wins I've had in this game fuck, the Barik was demotivated as hell after a quick 0-2 but we managed to come back 4-3.
Just keep practicing, you'll get comfortable eventually. That gap is probably the hardest to break but for whatever reason you pretty much fly up afterwords.

I'd never played a game like this before -- what most surprised me is how much sounds matter compared to other types of competitive shooters. I assume it'd be much harder to play without sound, since you can identify every character from the particular noises they make when they approach, or use important abilities.

In order to get any real mileage out of it, you have to shake up your playstyle and loadout pretty significantly - in a way that will negatively affect your healing output. And half the time, you won't even feel like you're doing more damage than what you'd accomplish with Focusing Lens.
Ying, like a lot of champs at the moment, really only has one viable option for Legendaries unless you're going for something super niche.
