the chassis is completely different to the e36 coupe and sedan. Its much closer to an e30 chassis.
For all you got wrong though you are right about the compact being a GOAT car. A 6cyl swap on a standard one is virtually plug and play, Even an M3 motor.
I love mine. Its like a comfy, moderish e30. I found the coupes and sedans to handle kind of blandly but the trailing arms of the compact keeps things exciting and lighter
