The prologue was really enjoyable because of it tbqh famalam.
Haven't gotten that far into Dies irae yet though, so I haven't seen that many allusions yet.

So, when the second line reads as:

Shouldn't that be corrected as:

I'd go with "I mumbled to myself while sitting on top of Cow’s desk," sans comma. The general rule is that you put a comma before while if it's meant to contrast, and you don't put a comma before while if it's meant to be "at the same time." So you wouldn't put a comma there in this case.

In your first, hypothetical example, the comma after said is used to pause and clarify after a nonessential clause, simply because having no comma after said reads strangely. It's a different case.
