They turned into energy crystals with 4.0, I think, then were removed with 5.0. Basically everything that was bought with comms before is now bought with credits.

So I'm just getting a taste of the game as it is as a f2p preferred player (I played for a short while right when it came out) and I'm starting to run into equipment that requires expansions to use. Like I"m not level 50+ I'm in the vanilla game and just getting stuff that requires rise of the hutt cartel to use. Is this going to keep happening? Am I still going to get some reasonable gear eventually? Do I need to be crafting?
Or should I just fork over the money and get the expansions?

You wont go pass 50 unless you start the DLCs like eternal throne, and rise of the hutt cartel, although for some Artifact Authorization is what you need most later on in harder missions which can be bypasses since your preferred i believe or a subscriber. So once you finish this mission, and have finished killing Baras that practically the last "free" good equipment you will receive until you fork out some cash.

So, is it worth investing in a hypercrate of Cluster or Vertica packs (for resale) and if so, which? I'm guessing since Cluster has Hord/Pall/Xoxaan it's the better of the two, but I could be wrong.
Unfortunately all these rare sets are now piss easy to get so I'm not sure if anyone would buy the packs. I missed out on my opportunity to profit from the Steadfast already and now they're no longer on a 30%~ off sale.

If you want to play a shallow but really accurate looking star wars shooter I don't see why not. I'd look up the population count first though.
