Really the only legitimate excuse I've seen, even then, unless they cut into the fenders and add flares, it still looks bad because of how far the wheels slide into the wheel wells.

This. Same with not having the wheels stick out at retarded angles. Something ideal fits the wheels nicely into tasteful flares or the stock fenders but not too far, and puts out as far as possible without rubbing.
