M5 E39 or M3 E92 are better than anything in production today.

it's the best handling car in the category hence it can beat way more powerful cars on track.

Downloading the torrent now.
Best...
Best handling?
Best fun?
OP wasn't descriptive enough.
I think the best BMW was the one with the most touring car wins.
hurr durr 2 doors
hurr durr coupe
e30 is the most victorious racing car ever built but according to some more recent reviews the street going version isn't that great for driving, it's an old car after all
Which reviews?
Ahhh, the "street going version" is almost identical to the touring car.
We're talking about some of the greatest touring car drivers in the history of mankind here man, not just some fucking upstart hipster.
I'm confident their ability differs greatly.
seconding, also an E30 review

This
3 best cars of the 90's
Unironically this.
Why did everyone forget about 8 series?
Slower than the M3 and M4, but definitely a better experience when driving it around. It is more of a driver's car.
Agreed
So much this
They made a lot of good shit in the past, but as far as models still in production go the closest thing left is probably the M2.
...
Expensive, heavy, and quite uncommon even when they were new. It also lacked the motorsport prestige of the E30 (and later E36) M3 and was aimed at a different market.
The first time I saw one of these on the road was two years ago. They look great, but all they have going for them is the aesthetic. For what you'd pay for even an 840Ci, you're stepping into 3.0l E36 M3 territory. The 850CSi is even more uncommon, but it's more expensive and slower than something like an E39 M5. I suppose you get bragging points for having a V12 but that's about it.
