On the same note, an RWD car going AWD would be a straight upgrade, an FWD car going AWD would be a straight downgrade.

Those are indeed relevant when you are a manufacturer trying to keep cost down and simplicity high for the greater market, however for performance applications, RWD is the best of the two, mainly because it separates steering and power allowing a much higher power output. That's why the most powerful production FWD car is way less powerful than the most powerful production RWD

It's just a matter of application: FWD is best for everyday stuff; RWD is best for performance stuff
