27, only started driving manual this year, learnt on my blobeye wrx

I've heard that Subaru manuals feel like shit compared to other brands manual cars. is this true or are people just memeing? how would you guys describe the difference and which makes have the better transmissions?

fordson major tractor then graduated to the hilux paddock car.
have never understood either people who think that they're special because they know how to drive a car with 3 pedals or those who can't drive one at all.
driving manual should just be how everyone learns to drive then, shit my grandma is 80 and has never owned an automatic so it's not that hard

I don’t remember which one I learned in.

Yuropoor, I chose to go for the early driving exam at 16 which was just new in my country. My dad didn't want to spend too much on my driving lessons so he decided to teach me himself beforehand.
One day he picked me up at school, told me to get in the driver's seat. I drove out of the city, around some dirt roads, and home afterwards. Teached me to rev match then too, though I kept being shit at that for a year.
Never drove a car before that. Manually shifting didn't feel difficult or special to me, keeping the car between the lines was the only thing I had trouble with at first. Probably because he's a gearhead too and fiddled with the suspension and the car has an LSD. The car being a landbarge didn't help either. Later I learned that he still likes to let the rear break out in a corner despite being in his sixties.

Oh shit, I forgot I turned 22.

Learned on an old 86 Isuzu P'UP. That thing was great to learn on because it had no power (86hp I think) so if you did something wrong it wouldn't 'buck' or 'lurch' it would just stall out. Learned on gravel/back roads in the country. Didn't drive an automatic until my dad was convinced I could drive manual in any situation (which didn't take long).

Would you recommend the TU-250X?
A couple cheap used ones near me and I can't decide between one of those or a Ninja 250

Fucking thing was like shifting a pole set in concrete, my god. Driven a few other cars since and it's always a good exercise.

I actually have a question about a manual conversion for a '95 R33 GTST. What would you guys consider reasonable in terms of pricing for a manual conversion kit for one? I'm looking at a few at the moment that are the whole package as far as I can see (just about everything from the manual shifter surround to the master and slave cylinders, etc) and they're coming up around $2k for the whole kit, minus shipping. One in particular on gumtree is paired with the R34 GTT 5-speed which is apparently a stronger box. I'm just wondering how reasonable that all seems to be in terms of pricing.

Anyone had any experience with manual conversions in general? I'm really flying blind here and most other forums are pretty much just retreading things I already know.

Old ass Massey Ferguson tractor(sort of pic related), then later on the road in a 94 4Runner

The tractor was a blast to drive. It went super slow, and had gearing low enough you could drop the clutch and not stall it. There was a backhoe on it that my grandpa build custom levers for.

That 4Runner though. Thing had the heaviest pedals I've ever felt, but it was great to learn on. I remember first week of learning on the road, I had to start uphill.

No wof, no reg, rust hole in passenger floor hahah thing was a hoot

You can do it with a 20det box for fuck all but it'll eat second gear and you'll probably need a diff too (4.3:1 from the na will be heaps too short).
"Big box" from the 25det routinely pulls 2 grand here. For that money you could probably build two decent 20det boxes with a taller 4th and 5th for better economy.

Fuck that it's a fucking necessity in the states

>24

>'92 ranger

I drive an '08 forester now and I have to agree that its shitty compared to the ranger. Super bad rev-hang from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd is just fucking gay. Like if you're even 50 revs away from what the car wants when going into 3rd you lurch around like a faggot. You can definitely drive still drive smoothly, it just doesn't seem as comfy as my ole ranger.

It's a subaru thing. It has to do with how their 4wd system works. They hate crawling too.

>19

>Friend's Civic Si
I had maybe like 10 minutes of seat time and then bought a car in Carlsbad and drove it down to San Diego. It was a 30 mile drive give or take.

And yes, subaru manuals are kinda shit mainly due to the AWD system. The clutch imo is very on/off, it gives you little to no room to slip it and the trans is practically made of glass from certain generations. I believe the blobeye is included, I'm not a big Subaru guy so I couldn't tell you.

Boy do they ever. Between 1 and 10mph is just something i don't do

I probably would've bought one a) if this weren't a factor and b) I could sit comfortably in it.

First manual at 19
02 celica

I bought my first manual without any experience driving them. It had a stage 1 "racing" clutch in it, and i learned that shit within 3 days. Couldnt feel anything with the clutch, i basically just guessed when to hit the gas. By the time i my dad had time to sit in the car with me to help me, i basically had it all down. Learning manual is literally one of the easiest /o related things anyone can do.

My manual is great, though it has new shifter bushings and high end synthetic Redline MT90 gear oil in it. The Subaru shifter sucking meme is probably from idiots buying ragged out 100k+ mile WRXs that got beat on hard and are surprised that it's worn out for some reason.

>You mean its required in the US? Ive been here all my life and never heard that shit

its not

I never took drivers ed and got my class d just fine
for my class m I took a course and at the end they gave me an endorsement and I took that and went down to the rmv and got my class d and m license right after.
having a guy ride dick to ass on the back of my bike in the city wasn't an appealing way to get my class m, but im sure I could've done it if I had to

Daily drive a 2011 Mazda 3 6speed now

almost 30 yo, EU.

Driving manuals only since I was 18. Had to learn how to doubleclutch into third because synchros were gone pretty much - it was a subaru 5MT which is bad on its own to begin with.

Now I doubleclutch and heeltoe even when dailying normal car. Revmatching comes naturally and it is surprising how easy is to get used to new cars - but that rewarding feeling when gearstick pops into gear without any resistance... aaahhh

why would an s2000 give you bad habits?

probably because he needs to get over 8,000 rpm just to get the most out of his engine.

learned on my dad's 1997 Toyota Tacoma. Still use it to drive to school and work till I get my own car

I drive an '03 WRX hatch, can confirm on all counts.

Funny story, so in '02 when the WRX came to the US, all the boiracers could finally afford a turbo impreza, and spent all day doing drag races in the high school parking lot until the transmission shattered. They then complained to Subaru about this, and to combat it, Subaru installed a delay valve in the hydraulic system connecting the clutch pedal to the actual system preventing you from doing that.
A side effect of that is that you get basically zero clutch feel at all. It's fucking horrible, but as with all things you learn to deal with it.

Depends; my dad let me drive his '98 Acura like 2 times to learn how to start and stop, but the clutch on that POS has .2 nanometers of bite so I didnt learn shit really
My first car, a '93 Celica, would stall if you stopped applying throttle, so I learned how to drive with both feet and let off the brake slowly while applying gas, which I translated to the clutch in my first manual
My first stick is a '93 Explorer 2 door, drove it from Phoenix to Tucson during a bit of rush hour. Grinded the gears twice pretty bad, stalled in traffic and had an old obese boomer couple drive up alongside me to yell at me, saw me struggling with my shifter and laughed then took off. Made it home though and can drive stick no prob now.
