VR thread

Starting a thread for anons who are VR users. All are welcome, as long as you are interested in the technology and content. Additionally, help me format a nice informative OP to be of service to all of us.

Not sure if this will be a successful try to get a VR general going, but hopefully we can get something going.

This is going to fall off of page 10. Since VR is a gimmick.

Good to be here! Let's get an essential games list going then, eh? Something to put in the OP every time, or whatever.

Let's also get other useful tools in here such as SteamVR Advanced Tools.

OK

Anyone tried the super hot vr? Genuinely looks like a lot of fun. Played the regular game and it was pretty cool. If super hot turns out to be not hot garbage on vr I might just torrent it

Think we should use a pastebin for this?

The regular game and the VR game are actually different games with different levels and mechanics. But yeah the Superhot VR is worth it, quite fun.

Honestly I suggest to torrent every VR game unless you want to support the developers.

I have tried it briefly. It is as frenetic as it looks, provided you're not afraid to move, dodge and wiggle around like you're a kid having just watched The Matrix and pretending to be Neo in his bedroom.

I think so, yeah. So, what do we do about folks like Freezypop over here who have never tried VR? Surely we're going to have plenty of folks spreading their "VR Meme lel!" nonsense here as well, but we're ALSO going to be getting some folks who are on the fence about the medium.
As you know: VR is something that must be seen to be believed, but if that's not an option it is very difficult to sell how it works and what makes it special (something this E3 failed miserably at.)

In that pastebin should be a short writeup about common VR concerns such as
>The dreaded screen-door effect.
>The fear of motion sickness.
>Which HMD is best?
>How do I get into VR development?
And, of course,
>Can it porn?

Any word of advice to someone buying a rift soon? Getting one this week.
Already built a pc (1060 6gb, i5 6600k etc).

>This week
Shit, man! Welcome aboard! I can help you out. I've had one since Christmas. Anything you need to know specifically?

Also, porn sites in general for vr. Waifu sim looks somewhat interesting considering it's not the same POV of a guy laying down getting ridden wearing a 180° camera like every vr porno I've seen

>So, what do we do about

Well what I can suggest is we compile a list of videos and content that demonstrates the technology in convincing ways. The Robo Recall video posted in the other thread isn't bad. Mixed reality videos are great too, like those made by the Fantastic Contraption devs.

No, he's made far too much money already.

Setup, how many hdmi/dvi ports, and how well the 2 sensors work for the rift. Is a 3rd necessary for 360° movement?

Who said I was going to buy it?

>anons talking so excited!
Cringe...

Rift owner here. You'll need to free up a single HDMI port. Transfer your monitors to the other ports however you can (via an adapter or something). 2 sensors can give you 360 degree tracking you just need to set it up right. The recommendation is to have them at opposite corners of the room, mounted high up, and angled down.

I'm cringing a bit too but to be honest I just want to get the thread off the ground first so I'm ignoring that behavior.

Don't you also need a sensor for the controllers though.

I am an advocate of WSS. It's my go-to for VR porn. Of course, I'd been tinkering with MikuMikuDance for various small projects and animations for years, so using my heaps of existing models and environments for WSS is part of how I get so much out of it.

Also, it's free. He's making plenty out of Patreon donations, but it is free.

I can get started on that, I suppose. I'm guessing Let's Players are likely off the menu? As much as it pains me to admit, Jacksepticeye has a pretty varied and extensive list of VR games under his belt all in one place. Just a thought.

I am really sorry. I legit read "rift" as "vive." No idea how that happened. Thanks for picking up the slack, Also, c'mon, people! This is a VR-thread! Post some pics!

Actually do you guys think this general would live longer on /g/? I'm not sure how fast threads there die compared to Veeky Forums. It can cover other tech too like AR so that we can get a higher user base.

>2 posts
Yep, the thread sure is cringe. Thanks for the diagnosis doc.

No the sensors all track the same things. What extra sensors basically does is increase accuracy and amount of tracked space available. If you have a big room, then you'll probably want 3 sensors, but otherwise, you may be satisfied with 2.

It really depends on what kind of audience you want here. What vibe are you going for, OP? If you actually want to talk about the medium, the hardware, or recent developments, make it /g/. If you want to talk about the actual experiences, games and adventures people are going on, keep it here. That's my input.

I just want a Veeky Forums based hub that connects the VR users here together and that stays alive.

It's sadly a short game, but still the most fun I've had in VR.

Personally, I like it on Veeky Forums. It's... closer to home, ya know? Right next door to /v/, right down the street from /u/.

In any case, I'll start us a PasteBin. Never done one before. Should be fun. I'll try to find some videos that have as little cringe as possible. Cheers!

You seem to be the one posting the "cringey" language suggested by another user but really you should take some hints sometime.

Here's a tip: don't use exclamation marks, and don't ever use ellipses. Unless it's used for sarcasm/memes.

Eh. It's a fair point, I suppose. I'm excited by the prospect of a VR general, is all. Time to get to work.

OK in the case this thread dies which it probably will, we should start a chat group somewhere so we can plan all of this stuff out for the long term, since you seem pretty willing and I don't want to handle all the work myself. I'm fine with Steam, Slack, Discord, or whatever.

How about BigScreen, or even VRChat? I figure that it would be only fitting to discuss logistics of a VR General there if nothing more than the sake of novelty. If not, I'm fine with Discord.

Well I actually haven't used either of those applications before so maybe we should start with Discord.

Well then. I know two apps going on the list. You make a Discord and I follow.
