Hey Veeky Forums, I might have picked up a bad habbit from my dad while I was learning to drive, just wondering if its a big issue.
I was taught that while Im braking, I can downshift, and slowly let out the clutch to help brake a little faster, I do it fairly often. Am I trashing my car?

wear the clutch faster

This thread again. Hello darkness old friend.

What would be a better alternative? If i have the space I can rev match my downshift, but I cant heel toe because my feet are too big and my pedals are really cramped
Jack Bailey
>downshifting to slow-down The technique isn't unsafe or ineffective. It is however unnecessary. Brake pads are far, far cheaper than engines.
Try downshifting AND braking at the SAME time.
Downshifting then braking is unnecessary engine abuse while braking then downshifting is a waste of time.
>slowly let out the clutch to help brake a little faster You're losing all the revs from your throttle blip to match engine speed. Practice rev-matching while braking.

>cant heel toe because my feet are too big and my pedals are really cramped Make the car fit you.

Thats what I said in the original post, while Im braking, I downshift

Downshifting to slow down or roll down a hill puts as much stress as upshifting or going up a hill at the same relative rpm. It’s more wear on the clutch and gearbox but brakes are substantially cheaper
