There's a small nugget of hardcore players keeping it alive, same as ps2.

Funny, I've been in PS2 since beta 2 phase and i've been in Fractured Space since alpha 2 phase. And both games are hovering just above dead.

Well first question, when was the last time you played it? If it was a good while ago the game may have changed considerably since you last saw it.
There's no ship progression tree anymore and there's no manufacturer XP, you can unlock whatever you like whenever you like so long as you have the credits to buy it.

Crew can be chosen, though it's likely you saw that already unless you played WAAAAY back. Crew can be customized with the use of pins that modify their abilities, that's relatively new. They're very small effects and even if stacked most would only grant a 5% or so bonus in anything, little bit of flavour but not OP.

They've manged to keep everything relatively balanced, the starter ships are just as competitive as everything else.

Bit of a problem tonight though, patch went live today and people are complaining of lag on all servers so eh...

hmmmmmmmm its been about five million years since I played, but I guess ill try it again this weekend

Day before yesterday they released an update which altered the way all three "Sniper" ships worked, reducing their max range considerably (The Overseer for example went from 60km range to 25km range) and put their main weapons in the secondary slot, gave them nice sustained DPS medium range primary weapons and a little more base HP.

Even with the range reduction their sniper secondaries are still the longest ranged weapons in the game but now instead of boring "I sit at forward base and snipe enemy without danger" gameplay they can actually get involved and cap bases/gamma. As expected the response has been "I fucking love this now I can actually contribute!" to "I fucking hate this now I have to contribute!".

So they went from dedicated snipers that can't do anything else to medium size/speed/range/dps ships with supplementary sniper weapons.
Personally I love it but your mileage may vary if you liked sniping.

Nothing to lose, the game is F2P now and doesn't yet have any P2W in it. I just wish it was more popular.

Oh doi, the biggest new addition that you may not have seen is PvE;

You can play solo against a team of AI bots with AI teammates.
You can play in a team of players against a team of bots.
You can play mixed teams, this is designed to speed up the queue and get people into battles faster but is currently broken and giving unbalanced games. Expect a fix soon.

So it isn't only PvP anymore, you can unwind with bots now.

well if you read what I said, they neutered the range of boltshitships so that they have to get up close. The sniper ships have a base of 8k hull and 1k armor, the heavies start at about 15k hull.

There's no OHKOs in fractured space, not from any single ship at least.

You can, there are several support class ships, ranging from outright healers (Of which you can chose a couple different types and styles of healing, from directed beams to long range heal drones to nanite cloud lobbers), some ships support others by providing buffs to their teammates in the form of extra defence/dps/speed/energy regen etc.
One of the heavy tank ships has a support ability which opens a jump-portal location directly at itself, allowing friendly ships to jump there from elsewhere in the game. There is a carrier/support ship which controls long range fighter squads and drones.
You can specialise each ships crew however you like, for support ships there are crew which reduce cooldowns, increase durations, increase energy efficiency and the like.

It's actually quite a good game but I didn't intend on poaching players from here, I was just asking if anyone played.

Oh and support abilities/healing are tracked with "SP" (Support points) throughout a game, you're rewarded with credits and XP at the game's end depending on your performance so you aren't missing out as a healer. Many people Main a support ship, I particularly like the "Equalizer", a small fast ship which can generate a speed-boosting bubble for friendlies, can release a pulse which purges debuffs from nearby allies and can deploy a destroyable buoy which reduces the enemy capturing speed, all while zipping around with it's decent DPS weapons.
