I am playing Oblivion and trying to kill the Sanctuary Dark Brotherhood members per poisoned apple. I took all the food there is and placed one apple in everybody's inventory. Can I just wait now and find them dead or do I have to let the game run outside of 'wait'? Are npcs simulated while sleeping and waiting or aren't they?

My question answered itself. It only took some patience, but when you finish sleeping and the npcs who ate the apple during that time period will just drop dead the moment you awake. So in a sense npcs are simulated while you sleep.
