just use an item crafting plugin, and then items can be made to act like skills, can't they? it's already that simple.

Plugins are a crutch, you should be knowledgeable enough to write and tweak your own scripts.

I'm wondering if I should make this a town proper or cut off everything but the protagonists' houses and have it be a stand alone, like they live on top of a hill or something.

Everything but the river and the top left of the map is basically left over from a stock map; so it's not really 'done' even part way by any means of the word.

That depends on the plot. Is the protagonist outcast? Is the town razed later? Is there anything else you want to add to this town?

Only you can answer these questions.

Dungeons & Dragons had a couple neat ideas for tabletop and later videogame RPGs. Lifting the works of Jack Vance was not one of them.

Yes, of course. However, it's a bit different from the way it plays out in SMT - not THAT different, but a bit different.

I don't currently have plans for storyline bosses being obtainable, so as it stands, no. This could change but don't get your hopes up.

It wouldn't be much of a party, but there's no reason it couldn't work!

It actually has some pros over a party of four. For example, AutoCounterAttacks, Reflect and Guard are considerably more powerful.

I'm not really sure what I'm implementing yet. So far, one character's probably close to a tanky healer/Paladin, and the other's probably just a straight fighter, but arguably things will get more clear as I advance

just remember: if you trigger h events in battles, then you need to give the player a way to distinguish between fuckable and non-fuckable enemies. then they'll know if they can just kill the enemy outright, or try to proc events.

Like slimes? I would think infiltration stuff, squeezing through tight spaces and minor shapeshifting. If particularly villainous they might possible people from the inside. Acid, poison, and being able to consume anything that fits inside them are par for the course, as are splitting abilities.

They could specialize in screwing with or operating machinery like space gremlins that fit anywhere. Shove themselves into capsules and throw each other like grenades to envelop someone or cover a room in slimy jerkass. Might be gun experts capable of pulling a trigger with any part of their body.

There's no winning that one. Unless you give the player the option to choose, and even then, giving more development to tne girl, if not outright guilt tripping the player into choosing your favourite girl, like in DQ5 is going to enrage a big part of your fanbase.

No matter what you do, prepare for backlash. Just remember, the more you develop a character, the more their glaring faults are visible. That's why /a/ never likes the main girl and usually go for the obscure side character, then get angry when she loses.

Started mapping out my town today.
The whole game takes place in this one town and one dungeon attached to it, so this grab is only a fraction of how the big the town will eventually be.

(ignore the weird errors going on here, it's because I'm using the tile size change plugin which causes the editor to look weird. It looks fine in game though!)

What sort of things do you guys wanna see in an RPG town? So far I've planned out stuff like shops, inns, town hall, guard outpost, a casino, a strip joint, but I'm open to more ideas for things to see and do in the town!

Because I am too timid to work on something like that.

Critique time: normally even houses without paving, especially ones visited often, have paths and trails in (sometimes not by choice but by the very nature of things). This is especially important if those houses on the bottom row are going to have top entries, since it shows you where to enter.

what do you mean by system? What selection? whether there are subjobs? How much a class defines your character?

Yeah, I'm not sure what system lends itself well to a dungeon crawler with minimal story. I can't decide if I want subjobs, advanced classes, hidden classes etc.

You can have 5 party members in battle if that matters.

you are aware that Etrian Odyssey exists, right? An entire series that is exactly that, and iterates over multiple versions of class systems?

At the end of the day, what kind of experience are you trying to capture in a dungeon crawler?

One with lots of replayability, so randomized loot, some procedurally generated dungeons, etc.

It seems like most dungeon crawlers like etrian odyssey opt to give you the bulk of class choices from the start and then the player has a choice of specializing skills within that class.
