Luka's starting sword is unique and can't be gotten rid of unlike every other weapon. It also has its own upgrade path that continues throughout all of part 1.
I wonder if the "correct" choice is to leave it as is like it was in the VN, or to keep upgrading it until the very end.

Why wouldn't you upgrade it though?

It's arguably one of his best weapons when fully upgraded to its max level in Part 1 (Holy & four elements damage), aside from the LoC sword drops like Sword of the Heavens and Excalibur of course.

The same could be asked about not taking Sonya along at the beginning.
Paradox's plot is about trying to follow the "true history" as much as possible. In the VNs Luka's iron sword was left untouched in favor of a completely different weapon for most of the story.
I'd bet a dollar that the status of Luka's sword is going to be one of the things with big consequences down the line.
