My main question was mostly what are mods people who have been running it, or in the past, think are essential to making the game better. Always played it on console because I had toaster PCs and laptops and most of my friends are console users so just sat in a party and chatted while playing.

The reasoning for that is largely because GOG patches their games themselves (well with the help of the studio devs if possible) so that it runs on all systems GOG is available on. A lot of the time they also implement the incredibly popular community patches so games don't run like shit. So the 4GB patch everyone talks about, is unnecessary with GOG, it's already done the flag is enabled. Same goes for 3 and Oblivion. If you already have the steam version though it's not a huge problem just not as easy as GOG's ver.
