PLD was fine-ish in ARR though. They were definitely unfinished having only a single combo and almost no damage in dungeons but they did well enough against bosses, which is arguably the real content anyways. hell if they had actually had 3 full combos like war, it'd have been war in the shed (again)

PLD was only fine in 2.0. when WAR was absolute dog shit.

Then WAR started getting buffs, and by the time Second Coil came around PLD was already in the bin. You'd run WAR/WAR or just run a single tank if you could get away with it before you took some waste of space PLD.

if your pld was really doing that low of damage they were a bad pld, especially since its not like you could fuck up the rotation (what rotation)

PLD wasn't even fine before 2.0. WAR completely shit out damage pre-ARR and PLD was only good against a few specific bosses.

If I start brand new, what's the best way to get to RDM as soon as possible? Do I have to buy the level potion for the base class, then a ARR+HW skip to be able to play RDM? At what level do they start?

You'd have buy a ARR skip and a jump potion at the very least to get a base class to 50, then you can unlock RDM and go through the HW story with it.
