So this is what you do.

You go online and then in ranked, don't worry you got this.
And now pick a character named Eddy.
In a fight just press whatever buttons, though do try focusing a bit more on the kick buttons.
Just do this until you are a Brawler, shouldn't take to long. This will set all the other characters you own on higher ranks automatically so that you don't have to deal with to much bullshit later on.

Afterwards get out of Online and go into practice mode, pick any character you think looks cool and learn their entire moveset and afterwards watch some of the many tutrial videos about that one character, you will find plenty everywhere. Training will take time so keep that in mind.

Now go out there and kick ass.

Tekken has almost no character variety, you don't lose out by playing multiple characters. Only very specialised fighters like Steve or Yoshimitsu require focused learning.

He's been playing Jack for almost 10 years. No matter what you do, you will not be able to beat him without putting in an incredible amount of time for a long period of time, and you'll likely only do that if you love the character.
