Completely relevant, one of the biggest characteristics of grand strategy is the fact that you actually feel the flow of time dynamically, your ruler changes and the political and strategical situation can change suddenly in the same game without needing to be scripted.

This is why I also feel that the HOI series is not "pure" grand strategy but rather watered down war games with grand strategy elements.

EU4 is pretty enjoyable right now, it only took Paradox a shit ton of expansions to finally make the game good.

HOI4 is still horrible, and it's probably gonna stay that way, the game mechanics themselves are flawed and not enjoyable; and the team in charge of the project has not been doing a good job with the expansions (both of them being pretty lackluster in terms of content).

The sliders were overrated desu, while the idea itself was great and it's a shame Paradox got rid of it, the way it was implemented in EU3 was horrible, for most of them there wasn't even a choice, the bonuses that one end of the slider provided were indisputably better than those of the other.

I recommend you purchase the original game and pirate the DLCs, most of them are quite important and add a ton of mechanics that make the game enjoyable, but they are way too many and are pretty expensive.

Common Sense, the Art of War, and the Cossacks are the "chunkiest" expansions though.
