France's motor culture:
>130hp in a 3 cylinders because MUH EU REGULATIONS
>Literally pushed Diesel engines to become popular for 20 years (up to 80% of global vehicles sales market), and now they're making a 180° turn and try to ban them in every city because MUH NoX/PARTICULATES EMISSIONS, and start to increase taxes on gas-oil more than ever.

>runs over a frog in my mustang
lol

well France and germany are the heart of the EU. plus smoke from diesels is way worse and smoke from gas

Yes, but both governments pushed the population and companies to be rolling coal, and now they're worrying about it.
It didn't made any sense at first.
Why would a large country like the US keep using petrol engine and a small country like France use Diesel? If there was any logic it should have been the opposite.

US has the cheapest oil of all developed countries
it has always been more expensive in the EU, even now its 2 or 3 times more expensive

And needless to say trying to depollute Diesel engines decreased reliability, plus knowing French engines never been really reliable.
This is what led to cases like VW gate.

>french
>car
>french car

They used to only measure CO2 emissions back then when they started this diesel craze

Prices as of today at my nearest station:
Regular 95: 1.326€/L = $5.892/Gal
Gas-oil: 1.223€/L = $5.434/Gal

Almost 2x more expensive in France than the US.

>using that as a depiction of rolling coal
You are like little baby. Watch this.

Worse part is this is a fucking plague over here. Local chavs literally jerk it over which TDi makes the most soot.

>premium diesel
ayy
98 RON makes sense in gas cars, but diesels will run on pure oil if you dump it in there

that looks like a seat, isnt that the spanish company that was absorved by Audi?

Audi=Seat=Skoda=Porsche=Lamborghini=Bugatti=Bentley=VW Group

>absorved by Audi

No. This, Skoda, Larborghini, and a few others, are all directly owned by VW afaik

Skoda is just slightly cheaper VW at this point, they used to make low end models but for the past 10 years or so their mid and high range models are pretty much on par with VW and Audi as far as interior goes(literally the only difference at this point)

can say the same thing about Seat and Audi i guess, the big models just look like Audi A4 or Passat rebrands

>but diesels will run on pure oil if you dump it in there
Yeah, older Diesels were indestructible, you could fill the tank with used frying oil and it would work.
But now the latest Diesels (since direct injection) became sensible to soot. Premium gas-oil like BP's Ultimate are supposed to make difference using more additives, especially good for repeated short trips when the engine's optimal temp is rarely reached. It's also meant to help reduce fuel consumption, but it's really depending on the engine. Sometimes it even increases fuel consumption (in theory more additive=less calorific power).

20 year old diesels maybe, but try that on modern directly injected common rail and see how long will it last.

I sexually identify as boomerkin

Got job, getting money together for my first car. Used car market is absolute shit show here making it almost cheaper to buy a Dacia Sandero than anything used because the decent used stuff is almost 7000 euros.

Options go from badly kept twingos to even older clios and every now and then I spot pic related, seriously considering pic related.

who landbarge 508 gt here?
i got it for cheap, don't bully

>france's motor culture
Their petrol engines are a fucking disaster only good for first 50k km.
Which is a shame, french cars are comfy.

>CS5
godly suspension
Renault Laguna is also extremelly comfy, at least the 2nd generation one. dunno about 3rd

Get the Supercinq instead of the original, it has a much better front suspension

It is slow though

Had a 407 for like 6 months, comfy but a piece of shit(like all the X07s)

did it crap out on you?

Not completely, but the electronics shat themselves a bit
>radio screen did not work after 5 minutes on
>randomly went into limp mode because of a secondary O2 sensor
>ripped motor mounts because they were not designed for that much torque
Seriously, who the fuck designed this?
>anti pollution systems are bad? better kill the engine and bypass the turbo as the driver is pulling onto a 130km/h highway

lol gotta save that environment first. Sounds like something EU would impose.

Mine only had one issue and it was fixed under warranty. One of the rear windows just fell into the door while driving lol I'm not exactly sure what broke.
Other than that it has been doing fine but it doesn't even have 100k km yet. The thing I'm most scared about is the gearbox, heard some people were having issues with it.

My gearbox worked fine at 350k km
But now i remember that both front door handles fell off and i had to screw them back in and the power steering pump shat itself as well because of poor design. You should check your power steering oil after a drive to see if it is bubbling

>anti pollution systems are bad? better kill the engine
This is why I unplugged the EGR valve on my car.
Engine check is always turned on, but in reality the engine runs much smoothier.

my bro renault laguna had problems since he bought it
it was from a renting company and he keeps having problems with the filter, plus the injection doesnt work proerly so past 2200 rpm it doesnt have power at all

These Renault 5 have been assembled from '84 to '96. Expect a 21 y/o car at best.

Forgot to mention it's an auto, that's why I'm worried. I believe there was no manual option and still isn't offered.

Bubbles as in it's leaking or something?

>Seriously, who the fuck designed this
Probably the same guy who decided that it's a good idea to drop your gearbox into an emergency mode if the fuel level is low. I'm not joking.

you say this as if I have a choice. the Super5 is a minimum of 3000 euros here, in bad condition, the rest are 7000 euros.

This is the screen that died on mine, they just go every now and then due to overheating of the circuit
The Laguna was elected worst french car ever by a few magazines and websites for a reason
>auto
>falling for the V6 meme

no, it bubbles up in some versions because of poor pump design and poor power steering line design: the original return line was too small and caused pressure buildup, and the pump had a design issue that pumped air with the oil, making it bubbly
where the fuck do you live? jewtzerland?

...and honestly the R5 is low class.
If you have to drive an old Renault I'd suggest at least a R25

>jewtzerland?
Close. Portugal
I have not been seeing any of those.

>V6
Worse. It's a I4 diesel.
Did they really have a V6 option?

I'll have to check on the oil. Thanks.

ai limão. o mercado de usados aqui é surreal.

Yes, they sold it in quite a few versions
>1.6L I4
>2.0L I4
>2.2L I4
>2.7L V6
>3.0L V6
Renault 9/11 or Volvo 340/360 are also decent option and extremely cheap in france, maybe these are not too bad in poortugal

Tell me about it, the other day I was on autoscout looking around with my dad, I could literally fly to Italy, buy a used civic hybrid for 4500 bring it over it, legalize it and it would still be cheaper than the exact same used car here.

i didn't know about that site, thanks

i just checked on a bike i want and i found it at literally half the price of what they're asking here and with less km on the clock
hilarious

here's a tip alberto barbosa, hybrids are taxed lower than regular cars. you can pay the ISV tax for the civic hybrid from 2011 for 200 euros. electrics aren't taxed at all, you just cant drive that motherfucker over though.

Used cars are VERY cheap in Belgium, and still affordable in France, if you are willing to tow it 3k km home

>if you are willing to tow it 3k km home
Why couldn't you drive them? See you can't just import any car into Portugal, we literally have a border tax, try to bring a normal car in and you'll pay nearly 50% of its retail price.

If its electric there is no border tax and if its a hybrid you pay something like.. 30% of the normal tax, which makes it at the most about 400 euros.

i still see a few R21 and R25 around in my town
R5 is pretty low class but it has a great rep for rally.
youtu.be/jnxLeQk3wm4 0:41

they get away with it because they claim to be taxing co2 and motor displacement and not because it comes from outside but the reality is that it basically is a border tax. Also, if the car is less than 6 years old, your tax is higher than if the car is 10 years old.

>Why couldn't you drive them
Because you can't insure it, at least not in france

>Renault 9/11
>extremely cheap in france
If at least they still existed, because I never see any on the roads. But you can find them on French website Leboncoin, ranging from 300€ to 1500€.
Common "old" cars in France are Renault Clio and Peugeot 106 1st gen. I owned one myself as a first car. Cheap to buy and to maintain.
Some olders like Peugeot 205 or 309 ridiculously had their price increased because of "Youngtimers".

I see plenty of Peugeot 205, Renault 9, 11 and 21 around here
The perks of being poor i guess

Buy a old Peugeot 206.
Had one up until this past summer as my 1st car. Can't complain too much, I paid & 500, replaced a rusty bonnet for like £30 and I was away.

The first time I drove it to work I under estimated a speed bump and fucked the exhaust downpipe. Kek.

Lasted me 3 years though the last year I had to swap the engine as head gasket went and the engine was cheaper than getting the gasket renewed.

I spent about £700 over three years on putting it through its mot / odd repairs ect.
Never broke down on me

Citroën BX, anyone?

Yes, 206 is a good choice, not too old, and cheap too.

It's great for the money. I saw a good condition gti 180 for only 650£ recently.
So cheap.
However can I just say, the off centre steering is fucking stupid. It constantly want to turn left slightly.

I know nothing about them but that looks fresh. Just Google and they're pretty cheap? Red pill me on them I like the look and the steering wheel is quirky

t-thats a beauty
the design of the back is a bit odd
citroen MX also looks pretty good, like a proto-Xantia
>Cabriolet version
the ugliest version imo

It's actually the other way around the original renault 5 has double wishbones while the super cinq has mcpherson's. The original renault 5 is much narrower and has softer anti-roll bars so it leans more, but that isn't a bad thing.

Thinking of buying a Laguna 2 as my first car. 2.0l petrol, manuel, 287k km. I was mainly thinking that it has a very nice interior and good power and is quite modern for the price (1500€). Am I actually very stupid and should just go for a proper shitbox for that money? It has a fresh inspection and I would only have it for a year.

Not the car in the pic

>the ugliest version imo
Its design is a bit "girly" I think, more recommandable for a woman driver.

If you intend to buy a Laguna 2, go for the second generation.
The first one was a disaster (broken electronics/fragile turbos). The second version is a lot more reliable, but will remain as a low price just because it's called a Laguna. Go for it.

My brother's laguna 2 has been a headache after headache.
You must revv it up in the highway to keep the filter clean or you'll have to change it every few months.
but its super comfortable inside and pretty wide so its a stable ride
id recommend considering other options.

The facelifted Laguna 2 won't fit in my budget :/

>287k km petrol
>1500€
It's worth half that

Compared to other Laguna 2s on sale here it's actually a pretty fair price.

Don't buy a fucking laguna then, buy literally anything else
If you want to stay french, the Citroën Xantia is a much better car of the same segment, the XM is a step up from it and should cost about the same

>Don't buy a fucking laguna then, buy literally anything else

Don't fucking talk out of your ass thinking you know shit.

Xantias yeah alright cheap but not too common, i.e. I would specifically want to buy the car from a dealership for financing and there are three within 200km of me and none of them are from a dealership. Also XMs are too expensive. If I want an XM that is not a diesel or not broken I need to pay +4000€

>+4000€
wat

Portufag here, can confirm, used market is fucked up beyond saving.
I have a car like pic related I bought some months ago, '93 1.4 Si. These are cheap as fuck in say Bongland, £200 to £300 at most. For mine, in actual good condition I paid 1100€, and it still was a find, in this condition they usually go for ~2000€

>financing a $1500 laguna

It's not a border tax per se. What happens here is imports have to register and pay taxes as if they were new cars. Including that fucking displacement tax.

You should be able to find them for cheaper but all of them are broken in some way.

>unemployed poor fag needing a car for an upcoming job but can't spare any money atm

also take note of the odometer

Jesus Christ how can this thing have so many problems, it's one thing after another, sometimes esoteric shit even the official dealer can't troubleshoot.
In 1 year it has cost us as much as our previous car, a Xsara Picasso, which was an amazing workhorse and better than the Berlingo in almost every way.

>Xsara Picasso, which was an amazing workhorse and better than the Berlingo
Not sure about that when you have to do a relocation

>4900€ for a 17 y/o car with 358000km on it
You will barely drive 10000km with it before sending it to the car breakers

>Not sure about that when you have to do a relocation
I've moved house several times with the Picasso, it fits a standard 90x190cm mattress, even an entire sofa and you can still close the rear hatch.
The thing is both are a compromise between comfort and carrying capacity, and while the Picasso was a bit smaller it was better it retained car-like handling, the Berlingo is a fucking van with electric power steering that feels like you're driving with a racing simulator wheel.

>Not sure about that when you have to do a relocation
Rear seats fold down for increased space, you can even remove them in like 30 seconds for even more space.

I moved with nothing but my Xsara Picasso and it was just fine, i moved my mattress and bed in it.
That's what you get for buying a new car, as a rule of thumb, anything first produced after 2007 or so is absolute crap and should be avoided

I'm disappointed to say the least, the car wasn't bought brand new and neither was the Picasso, but still, it's used as a family/company work car.
The gear lever cables broke and left me stranded on an intersection in an icy winter, had to call a friend to tow me
Had to replace the shocks, now it looks like the springs will be due for a replacement too
The turbo on the 1.6 HDI leaks soot from somewhere, apparently this is "normal" on this engine
Air filter is inaccessible despite the fact that it's a small engine fitted in a big car, the air intake pipes are in 3 different parts that refuse stay connected together
There is some kind of heat shielding that we had to replace because it caused a horrendous tinny rattle at higher engine RPM
It began refusing to start, it would turn over and just about start but then refuses to as if the immobiliser is stopping it, nobody could figure it out, replacing the ECU fixed it
Replaced clutch and flywheel, which cost us almost as much as my entire car
Somehow, and I've got no fucking clue how that happened and when, the gearbox lost most of its oil so now it's fucked and today we left it at a shop that specialises in gearboxes.

I'm forced to carry heavy stuff in my 1.3 shitbox because the "work" car refuses to work and constantly has something wrong with it.

The 1.6 HDi (especially the 110hp version) is prone to breaking if not well taken care of.

>anything first produced after 2007 or so is absolute crap
pic related

I knew diesel was bs back in the 90s
every diesel car of that age or older has its bumper absolutely smothered in soot
not to mention how diesel trucks and trains somehow get away with being even worse

Meanwhile the 2.0 HDI with 90hp was fucking bulletproof, it even used less fuel and felt like it had more grunt on the highway, but I'll chalk it up to the Berlingo's brick-like aerodynamics and pigfat weight.

I have no first hand experience with the -08 cars but i assume they suffer from the same problems as the new DS family for example, which are literally all electronic
The best PSA diesel engine ever was the RHY, i'm literally never buying another french diesel with another engine

Now every automaker are switching to the "all electronic" era.
Personally, I would get upset if I had to use a touchscreen in order to adjust the AC fan speed or audio volume while driving.

For example, here's the interior of the latest Renault Espace.
That central vertical screen is obviously inspired from the Tesla Model S.

All electronic isn't that bad, especially considering the amount of digital stuff in any modern car.
Touchscreens, however, are literal cancer.
