"Drive through the mud" they said. "It'll be fun" they said.

no it isnt faggot
but was it not fun or something?
Adam Garcia
fun while it happened, not when cleaning up afterward.
Christian Phillips
I'm sad that I'm putting this out to pasture for now. City living in SoFlo doesn't give me space to wheel or keep it running
Justin Powell
But pretty stoked to have this for a new daily driver. Gonna put it through the paces when I head back to CA in the spring.

Having trouble getting the old manifold off the pipe, probs just going to cut it

Here's the real carnage. Haven't measured it but it looks ugly. It's going to look uglier with the crossmember back in.
Noah Morris
Original motor mounts bolted up, going to re-use the 232 dizzy, harmonic balancer, and water pump. Need to figure out the alternator and crossmember. Intake manifold has to be notched to use it on a 4.0, will get some pictures of that when the gasket comes in.
Junkyard drilled holes in the pan instead of using the drain plug, have to get it welded. Then I can make it run and do doughnuts in the field.
Evan Gray
Colorado diesel? Didnt know the new ones had a diesel options. Interesting. Motor size?
Jaxon Wright
That's like their biggest selling point. The only domestic market midsize with a diesel option. It's the same VM Motori derived 2.8 that was available in Jeeps for some time (can still get a 2.8 diesel Wrangler in overseas markets). Is this the 5-6hr beach road trip user from a couple threads ago?
Parker Cooper
Any NCfags? Where are some good spots to go wheeling

nice truck my man usually not a chebby fan but id be lying if this didnt get my dick tinglin

Here's muh 2005 jeep grand cherokee. I live in northern Utah, so there's some excellent trails that I like to go down.
Aiden Anderson
>rumor has it the new ranger will have a diesel It will. It'll initially cop the same 3.2L five cylinder diesel currently fitted to the Ranger in other markets. It's also rumoured it'll eventually get the 3.0L diesel V6 that's earmarked for the F150, the same engine that's been doing the rounds with Landrovers for some time now.
Wyatt Rogers
>a land rover engine
Anthony Fisher
PSA/Ford engine* Same mob that developed the 3.2 5 cylinder and 2.2 four cylinder already in the global Ranger, Transit and the now defunct Defender. The V6 is a good engine and along with the ZF 6 and 8 speed gearboxes are probably the best built thing on the Discovery.
Ryder Reed
not without me u dont

no, I'm a different user that was in that thread. I gotta say, 30 mpg highway is a nice change from my stroked jeep that was pulling 12 mpg with a tailwind. The minimax seems capable enough with lockers and selectable traction control. Reading up on it it seems like it will make more power more fuel efficiently with a chip though. Being that this is my first obdii vehicle, I need to learn more about tuning before I do anything.

avoid the SOHC V6s. get pre-1997 V6 instead.
but then again, "daily" V6 Rangers are kinda not that daily-worthy with the gas mileage and comfort unless you absolutely need the bed
pls user
you know i do post without posting tay, right?
Charles Sullivan
>you know i do post without posting tay, right? SINCE WHEN HAS THAT BEEN ALLOWED FAGGOT
Daniel Baker
i generally dont give a shit about daily "comfort" and the mileage doesnt bother me because the plant i work at does van pooling out to the facility. curious as to why you say to avoid the SOHC V6. most things i read say that they're the good ones also. if you have any other suggestions im open to them, it just seems like ranger owners are the most non retarded with the pricing in my area.
Sebastian Johnson
>it just seems like ranger owners are the most non retarded with the pricing thanks, user. sincerely, a rangero
SOHC 4.0 Litre V6 have notoriously had issues when at high speeds or peak output for the first 5 or so years of them being around (so early 2000s) until they made it a bit stronger past the mid 2000s. I have a 2010 that I beat the shit out of contently. the older OHV 4.0s were great and got the same gas mileage and similar power as the SOHCs. Plus pre-1997 gets you those delicious twin beams in the front that are easier to lift and work with if you want to upgrade in the future.
you can lay out the extra $3000 for a 2006+ Ranger or save $2000 and go with a 1997 or so ranger. get 2006 FX4s or the older Edge II models so you get the 4.10 rear geared 8.8 axles and those factory skid plates that are surprisingly strong

I'm not Tayfag, but they have commonly have timing chain issues around 100-150k mi, the chains used a guide made of Teflon that eventually wears away causing the chain to rattle excessively and likely break, It can be fixed but the repair often runs more than the cost of the truck itself, it was mostly fixed by 2002 though so just avoid trucks between then and 2000, and then anecdotally I have a friend who ended up blowing a headgasket at only 115K mi with the same engine in an Explorer but I suspect that it's because he thrashes the shit out of it.
Christian Powell
I'm meeting this guy on thursday to check this ranger out
I still have a bone stock 96 k1500 Z71 that is babied and never leaves the Los Angeles pavement.
Am I welcome?
Landon Rogers
I ordered some Toyo GSi5s for winter because they're the only 285/70/17 true winter tire I could find. I'm currently running mt/r kelvars and they don't like the snow. Anybody run the toyos before? I had KO2s last winter and they weren't great in the citys.
Christian Campbell
Yeah I forgot about the plastic timing chain thing. Modern BMWs use this design for programmed obsolescence. Ford got rid of that on the SOHC when fleeters were pissed that they would get that sound.
Headgasket too but that's only because the engines aren't meant to take a beating overreving and past their limits. There was a guy here who had put an ebay superturbowhammydickelongator or whatever on his SOHC and ended up shooting a head through the hood and spraying hot oil everywhere. The mid-2000s and so forth are good as longas you don't do that kinda shit to it.
>rebuilt automatic transmission at 130k mi why
Also, vin decoder says it's a 4wd OHV V6. 1995 means twin tractor beams so that's good. 4wd and comes with a camper shell AND a tent. seems like a pretty good deal since the shell and tent can go for $500-$1000 itself. Check the underside for possible damage/ rust (lol utah rust but who knows) from offroading but won't look like it with those kinds of tyres.
if it's got air conditioning, then you got yourself a good one for $4000. i love my ext. cab for tools and whatever, too.
Carter Hall
I'd go out on a limb and say that's ludicrously overpriced, you could get a Tacoma with way more life left in it for his list price, the KBB should be around 2500, possibly 3000 if it's in really good condition, the guy's relying on his camper shell and tent to bring him the last 1000 but resale wise they're worth nowhere near that you could pick up something similar for 200 used if your willing to clean it up a bit
Christian Sullivan
original advice asking guy here
i definitely scoured my locals for a tacoma. they are all horribly over priced with 400k miles and shitty ebay light bars and people still ask 5k+ for them.
Grayson Green
Sad news... No more doggo companion to bring on excursions innawoods. Had to put her to sleep today :-(
Aiden Gray
im so sorry
Asher Watson
Yeah, people tend to list them for an insane amount, however they rarely go for that price, most of the time the seller just gets fed up with people looking and giving lowball offers and eventually accept something reasonable usually in the neighborhood of 20-30% of their asking price, but if you're not in a rush you can usually snag one for way cheaper if your willing to watch the markets for a while, I'd had a Cragislist alert set up for around 6 months and probably looked at around 20 Trucks before I found the guy I bought my Tacoma from, he was leaving to go on a 2 year road trip with his girlfriend in a week and needed to sell the truck fast since his storage arrangements had fallen through, I was able to respond to the ad and buy the thing within 6 hours of the listing going up for 2500$ at 130k mi, if your patient, have cash, and can move fast you'd be surprised at the deals you can find.
RIP doggo
Brody Russell
im at the point where its about to snow and im sick of driving my accord in winter weather. ive been watching my local classifieds for like 5 months now and it really does seem like ranger owners are the most sensible.
Cameron Perry
oh my doggo died literally 2 weeks ago too, murph
sorry for your loss.
[spoiler]tfw doggo /org/ meet in heaven before human /org/ meet
iunno dude. those 4wd rangers are pretty good and he can almost definitely haggle down that $4k.
I was a bit too quick to say that it was a very good price since canada living means anything from 95 is rusted to shit. if you can brnig that up here, you can sell it for around $6000 canadian with the cap and tent.
in any case, see if you can get him to let it go for $3k or so after you figure out why he had a transmission rebuild at 130k miles. my 2010 is at around 131k miles right now despite being literally 15 years younger than it lol
Isaiah Murphy
Ah right. Well standard configuration for the Ausfag models I'd rated at 200hp with the same peak torque output you guys get. So either the American Colorados are simply tuned to drop the torque peak off earlier in the rev range, or the Aussie version might have a better VNT turbocharger that maintains boost higher in the rev range. I'd start by investigating that. But throw a 2.75-3" dump-back exhaust on it, and take it to a reputable dyno tuner well versed in diesel engines. Someone who understands how AFRs contribute to boost curves and who can keep EGTs at safe levels (rich fuelling and high EGTs are the biggest premature killers of diesel engines). The diagnostic port won't make a difference to how you may or may not understand diesel tuning.
Other than that they're a pretty stout motor with wet cylinder liners and 6 head studs per cylinder. VM-M make a pretty tough little diesel. I'd love to see VM Motori's 3.0L V6 in a midsize pickup, but with the rumours the Ecodiesel ending up in the next Wrangler we may not have to wait long... >pls user You're very welcome
Jason Morales
Hold the phone Just did some digging and found the US version has the same Garrett GTB1752VKL as the 200hp Aussie version. I'd say the difference between the two outputs would only be to do with tighter US emissions targets. >tl,dr; Tune 'til your heart's content.
Christopher Ross

Why is it so hard to find a 90s Chevy K25 with a manual, Detroit Diesel, and the extended cab? I would love to have one to turn into a redneck truck but Ohio must hate me.
I don't even HAVE to have the diesel. Just finding a stick is hard.

New to offroading/overlanding. I live in the north suburbs of chicago, anyone know any fun places to explore? Also looking for a brushguard that fits an 02 Expedition. A branch fucked up my right side headlight last time I went into the woods.

I can't wait for first snow, gonna whip some sweet donuts in every empty parking lot near my house. The rear locker in my 2wd pickup is great for donuts
Dominic Thomas
The 6.5s were fairly popular, even offered in all the half ton models. Totally not surprised that I can't find a standard though.
Thomas Watson
Thanks for the condolences. It feels weird not having her around. Not looking forward to the next trip innawoods, but that's not until the beginning of the year when the hunters leave.
Gravel/dirt road at least?
"Urban jungle" hopping curbs and driving down stairs?
Depends on your skillset and if you have LSD. A few months ago I saw an idiot who managed to get a Civic to the top of a Jeep trail on top of a mountain in NC.
Michigan? It's been raining here non stop since Sunday morning. Shits about to flood around here.
It may be a bit of a drive but I saw some stuff that looked promising in NW Indiana in the woods around the steel mills and sand dunes.
Another idea if you're up for the drive is Northern MI. Only problem is the woods are full of hunters through the end of the year.
Its got that fake lsd thst brakes the tire if it starts to slip rather than lock the diff.
Chase Cook
Thanks for all the info, my jeep is a retarded obdi efi system so my tuning was all sensor based and lying to the computer. I don't know shit about diesel tuning or how programmers effect passing emissions tests. I also don't know much about diesels in general and especially not modern diesels with emissions equipment. What mods besides tuning are worth my time? Cold air intake? Sounds like you're reccomending a larger diameter dump back exhaust. Are the duramax.com programmers worth a damn or will I melt my DEF system and motor? from what I can tell I can't add more than another 80 ftlbs of torque before needing a beefier transmission.
Connor Morgan
Yeah, one of only three domestic vehicles that come that way from the factory. The diffs look a little on the small side though, so we'll see how it holds up locked.

How much was the Colorado Z71 package with front and rear lockers? I hope Ford does something similar after seeing the success of the new badged Colorado come out after the 2010 discontinuation of GM's Colorado.
Christian Wright
So those and the prohibitive expensive G-Wagon are the only ones with rear and front lockers?
Not available in North America.
Nice. Shortbed tacooper is a great setup. 3 inch lift needs to see some bigger tyres after your disctroy your coopers.
Isaiah Morgan
it's the zr2 package, Msrp is around $48k plus dealer fees, I got mine off the lot for $38k otd since it's a '17
Daniel Peterson
38 with both lockers and front comfort is a pretty good deal. ext. cab option?
do you have good skid plates with the package?
planning a lift and bigger tyres?
Eli Evans
aluminum skid plates, but they should be adequate. Zr2 has redesigned control arms and special shocks. I'd lose all of that if I lifted it and put new tires, it should be capable for everything but rock crawling as is and I still have my jeep for the black diamond and above trails and a diesel truck to trailer it with now.
Thomas Nelson
extended cab is the base, I hate crew cabs and would have gotten a standard if I could have.
Thomas James
torsion bars are easier to lift than TTB. All you gotta do it crank them up
Easton Barnes
Ah, now I see what you're saying with the OBD2 thing. The Colorado ECU is indeed remappable, and things like the Duramax tuner are a great idea. Theory is you can tune by rewriting the ECU, however when you return the car to the dealer for servicing they'll often scan the diagnostics and reset the ECU to default. These plug in modules allow you to reload a saved tune (and default back prior to dealer servicing so they don't get suspicious). Turbo diesels love bigger exhausts. It allows the turbine to spool up with decreased resistance, therefore decreasing turbo lag, and also allows exhaust gasses to escape easier making a big difference to exhaust gas temperature (EGT). The absolute only downside to larger exhausts is preferences in noise pollution, but you can always add another straight through muffler with little flow penalty. And while those tuner's have some reasonable default tunes programmed in, you can't beat a good optimised dyno tune with AFRs and EGTs monitored live. You'll probably also find another 80ft/lb will be more than enough.
The best way to think of diesels is they make more power by burning more fuel, where as gas makes more power by flowing more air. A diesel you can screw more boost into, but unless fuelling is altered there'll be no noticeable difference in power, just a lower higher AFR and cooler combustion. Unlike gas motors, boost doesn't kill diesels (as long as your cylinder head is adequately clamped), overfueling does.
Thomas Brooks
I suppose if he doesn't care about ride quality, that's true. But cranking up ride height destroys your ride comfort where every bump feels like a speed bump.
The extra $300 that the keys cost me ended up being a pretty good investment.
Ayden Rodriguez
i dont really get mudding. so you just floor it through the same pool of muddy water all day? why do people do this?
Levi Cook
Sounds good. Are cold air intakes worthwhile? and another 80 ftlbs is all the transmission can safely handle so I'm not looking to go too crazy, I just want to get the most out of the stock powerplant without doing all the crazy shit I did to my jeep.
I also get the impression that an EGT sensor and tranny temp sensor will be useful, any opinions?
Nathaniel Walker
And then you go home and change all of your fluids and purge grease from every joint. I stick to rock crawling and desert running
Justin Baker
Local dealer just got a 2011 4runner on a trade-in. They claim it's a Trail edition with KDSS. How can i tell if this is true when i go look at it? Does the Trail have any demarcations? The Vin check is no help.

A bigger airbox snorkel is an advantage on a lot of turbo diesels, I'd imagine the Colorado would be similar?... An EGT pyro gauge is usually the absolute last word in diesel longevity. They give a better, truer reading pre-turbo, but that requires drilling and tapping a pyro meter into the factory manifold. If you're not willing to butcher a near new vehicle, you can always get an exhaust shop to weld in a threaded bung into the dump pipe just post-turbo. Post turbo readings aren't quite true, and react with a bit of delay as the turbine acts like a dampening heat sink. They'll usually read 150-200°C cooler but they're better than nothing and saves drilling. At the end of the day a dyno tune with reasonably safe AFRs and with a bit of room for error with EGTs should mean you won't really need a pyro gauge.
As for trans temps, along with stuff like oil and water temps and oil pressures, get A Scangauge 2, or some kind of copy. Plug into the OBD2 port and give up to four live readouts of your choice direct from the ECU.
Samuel Jenkins
I'm hoping someone comes out with an aftermarket exhaust manifold that already has the bung, if not I'm definitely having it drilled and tapped. I saw those scan gauges, but if it just runs off the obdii port I can program my dash to display most readings already. I'm likeing the duramax.com tuner since it has switch on the fly tuning for towing, DD, and sport. I'm waiting to hear back from them whether or not I can return to stock and then back again. Unfortunately I can't find a diesel shop near me that tunes and is reputable, and that will only get worse once I move to CA since they have much stricter emissions standards.
Nathan Taylor
Can someone explain to me why Range Rovers are around $125k after all the options? Why not just get a G-Wagon at that price? What do Range Rovers have over the BMW X5 or whatever that are also available with probably the same amount of seating and a diesel option? It can't just be the fact that they can technically go offroad?
Chase Taylor
post jeep
also, that's a shame you can't do a nice lift. one more tyre size up and a 3 inch lift has it looking pretty nice. regardless, you should still be able to hit most of those easy-moderate trails with your diffs lockable
Asher Jenkins
If it's anything like the older Ford tuners it should have one of the default tunes as a factory tune. Guess it depends on what readouts your factory cluster gives you, but in my experience the factory sensors going back to the ECU are usually better than all of the aftermarket rubbish bar maybe VDO gauges and sensors. You'll also get other handy readouts like EGR operation percentage, live A/F ratio and turbo boost via the ECU :D Also saves running extra cables and hoses into the cab and saves drilling and adapting further sensors and associated wiring all over the engine bay. About the only thing most ECUs don't read (AFAIK) are Exhaust Gas Temperatures (happy to be corrected) which necessitate a pyro gauge. Dyno tune (or any of the default tuning modes for that matter) shouldn't matter when it comes to emissions, as you can always select the factory tune come time for the CA sniff test. But yeah, hold out until you find a decent dyno operator that's experienced with diesel tuning ;)
William Martin
I could list all the shit done to it, but that'd take too long. Suffice to say that I haven't hit a trail I can't beat.
Ethan Cox
I just wish those scangauges didn't look so ugly, I love the look of a-pillar pods. And as far as tuning, if you know anyone in south florida or CA bay area to reccomend I'm all ears.
Gabriel Mitchell
Niiiiice. That from 2013 too so what you done to the Jeep since then?
Beadlocks running 3PSI on my friend's beadlocked 2012JK on 35 inch tyres have climbed every rock near the trails I've found here. Even this one area with an "entrance exam" of a 3 metre rock ascent over the course of 10 m. Rocking back and forth even without a winch.
I should also add in that's a very damn clean hood and fender setup. I'm scared to ask what it looks like now.
Kevin Myers
Heh, I'm an Ausfaggot so your shit out of luck with recommendations... They don't look the best, but at least it's easy enough to unplug and remove them completely, and fit it back in again if you're doing a long trip, say pulling a car trailer. I'll keep my eye out for any other OBD2 based readout gauges. There may be some sort of option involving daisy-chain gauges kind of like a Defi style? Good luck!
Dominic Kelly
3 core aluminum radiator, other than that just maintenance. it's pretty much exactly what I want it to be. only thing on my list is to remove the back seat and build a tool box, repaint it green and add onboard air.
