I've played the Skullgirls tutorial and looked up a million videos about the general fighting game mechanics, i'm just grinding away at putting it into practice and getting my execution down on some moves.

Firendly reminder that dodging matches against characters or players you dislike fighting is equivalent to skipping a test in college, you still have to figure out the matchup at some point but when you skip it you condition your brain to believe the problem is worse than it really is, hampering your progress in the long run

Never run from fights. Never deny anyone the chance to rematch you, be it winquitting or lossquitting. Even if you dislike the matchup strongly and think you won't learn anything from it because the enemy character is "dishonest" or "unga bunga", use that time to experiment. Try sidesteps and backdashes where you previously wouldn't, try interrupting strings you never tried to before, try to figure out how and when you can outplay the opponent during the match, don't skip that part just because you're going to go into training mode later. Challenge yourself.

Shit is no where near as ambiguious as everything in tekken. You can also hold down back and be safe. Tekken is so much of a lab game where you need to memorize all of the characters shit or get stomped, it's infuriating. I spent hours and hours learning to KBD, setups, combos, wall shit and punishers, none of this shit matters if you don't have character knowledge.
