So to farm gems from bosses, you get to the point where you are able to fight the desired boss you want to farm. But before you do that you backup your save so you can reload it if you don't get your desired gem. Is this correct?

For layer 3/4 bosses yeah, helps a little to open the door then BHM put so you don't have to open it everytime you reload. You can savescum for layer 1 bosses too I guess, cuts a little time but you don't get to keep Chunks/Insight.
