Well I assert that a majority of people will be playing the japanese voices, but I fear newfags will come rolling in swarms saying how the dub is so great and shit.

I'm not implying that, I'm just disappointed they are not even going out of their way to hire new people, and from the dubs I heard of the past two games so far, they aren't very good in English except for a few characters. Being a nip doesn't help either. C'mon, you agree that the Japanese voices beat the English voices in this department, right?

I play the dubs universally, there's no reason to play with JP voices if you don't understand what's being said.

Is it true that a vocal minority of people in the west prefer subs and most people prefer dubs of games? I mean, in Japan we get English movies late and have dubs way later, or we have western games that don't have dual audio at all here.
I mean in my opinion, if the production was such a hassle and that anime translation dub shit is "niche" in the west, then why bother with it? Why not just do japanese audio only with subs?

Dubs are more important in America because Americans speak English and the vast majority get little to no exposure to Japanese culture at all. So by putting it into English in every single way, it ups the chances of it becoming popular in America even with it's Japanese origins. Y'know how Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban got changed so basically nearly everything takes place in America? They tried the same deal with DR1 by giving a lot of characters easier to say nicknames, making references to American foods instead of Jap foods(Ragu, Hamburger Helper and Chef Boyarde get mentioned by name), and all references to Japanese urban myths got replaced with western equivalents(Genocider Syo -> Genocide Jack -> Jack the Ripper)

I mean I ain't some Jap, but isn't English actively taught for a majority of schools there? So that's probably why Japs have an easier time digesting or looking into western media while America needs everything basically put into terms they can understand.

I'm surprised they didn't go a step further and give the whole cast localised punny names like in Ace Attorney. That definitely helped the series gain traction in the West.

Also yes, we learn English in schools, although it's optional if people go through with it completely or just learn the basics.

IIRC, when DR 1 and 2's american rights got put up for sale Spike Cunsoft didn't think anyone would bid on it and only two companies did, NISA and some other unknown smaller company. Atlus did not even show interest in it, most likely due to existing translations of the 1st game and the fact the 2nd game was going to be fan translated and had good progress on that end. It's no secret that once something is in English once, Atlus doesn't give a shit about localizing it.

The difference between Ace Attorney and Persona 5 is that ever since Persona 3, they never tried hiding that the game takes place in Japan. Nearly every advertisement for Persona 5 in english mentions you're a Japanese high school student living in tokyo and fighting demons with your friends. They don't try to hide it's japanese origins at all and openly embrace it with English dubbing being kept because despite it being a Japanese game that takes place in Japan, Americans still don't know Japanese. So in that sense its not as retarded as you're trying to make it sound since the player is told from the get go everything is Japanese. If it still seems weird then it's completely on the player at that point. For Persona 5 too they added the Japanese dub and I'm gonna guess why P3, P4 and PQ were english only is due to them being on PS2 and 3ds respectively, so there was no room for dual audio or the technology wasn't there for it. So yeah the whole Americanizing thing isn't applied to Persona series from 3 on. You should check out Persona 1's original localization if you want a laugh.
