ITT: We discuss why automatic is autotragic

>new auto transmissions are far better and sophisticated nowadays. new 10 speeds shift with incredible ease, manuals are a dying bread, just like these autotragic debate threads

What is the best soft drink? What is the best dish?

Hint: everyone thinks his favourite drink and his favourite dish are the best.

Why "modern" automatic gearboxes are "better" than older ones?

Why automatic gearboxes aren't widely used in track vehicles (except drag racing)? Why F1, Nascar, WRC run automatic gearboxes with TC?

but they're also boring as fuck to drive

F1 uses an electronically operated manual iirc. Hell they even have clutch paddles on the wheel

Let's throw some more fuel on this dumpster fire.

Autos are reactive.
Manuals are proactive.

An auto will only drop a gear if the car is already slowing down, where a manual can drop a gear in order to slow down.
Meaning an auto has to rely on foot braking alone which is less than brilliant.
Engine braking + foot braking = shorter stopping distance. No exceptions.

Semi-autos exist which allow you to engine brake, to a degree.
But they are all sequential so you can't do block changes (which are critical to a successful e-stop - seriously, you get tested on this shit), and if you want to select your own gear why don't you just have a manual instead and have less mechanical complexity to potentially go wrong?

There are two things that autos are very good at:
>stop-start town driving in heavy traffic
>letting disabled folk drive
In every other instance of normal every day usage a manual is better.

tl;dr
>if you drive in heavy traffic an auto is better
>if you drive anywhere else a manual is better
>if you drive a long distance it makes no difference as all you're doing is holding your foot in one position
>if you're physically disabled an auto might be your only choice
>if you have neither co-ordination nor proprioception an auto is better

>iktf
there is ultra heavy traffic in my shitty country. are there any tips in a stop and go scenario? my legs start to get numb too specially if im wearing heavy shoes

I want to like manuals but I live in Seattle. This town is made out of traffic and wet hills. I don't buy OPs claim that manuals are better mpg either, not vs a modern auto.

A sequential system like smg can drop gears faster than a person and even torque Converter autos will downshift quick enough under heavy braking. The trans is never going to be the deciding factor in an emergency stop

>The trans is never going to be the deciding factor in an emergency stop
Except 90% of all cars here are manual, and since braking alone if objectively worse at stopping than engine + foot braking it absolutely is a deciding factor.

Seriously. If during your test the examiner has you perform an emergency stop and you fail to use engine braking, you get a minor fault for not stopping as quickly as you could.
Which potentially means you fail if you pick up enough other minors.
And if you do that while going past some point he's picked out as his stop mark (which you won't know about) you just fail.
