Pike and shot is objectively the best period.
I'd also be ok with 15th century again and get the hussite wars but that obviously wont be it.

Also i like certain parts of chinese history like fall of Ming but not three kingdoms boring shite. But obviously if they ever do China they will do 3 kingdoms first because then you have a couple equal strenght factions instead of later in history where certain factions are basically all of china

16th century South East Asia would be nice too. Lots of kingdims and country specific units with interesting weapons. I played a Mount and Blade mod of it once and I liked it a lot.

Looking at the Steam description and the screenshots it seems neat, though I can't help but notice that (in the screenshots at least) there are only positives in the traits. There's only one that's sort of negative (the one with 15% less prisoners after a battle). Has he removed all the negative ones completely?

If you check the Google doc he links in the description, you'll see that no. You can still gain completely negative traits (although from my understanding the Likes X garbage is out) and some traits still have negatives, like Maimed Arm, Maimed Leg and Blind.

Renaissance also means a larger variety in tactics especially as the game goes on, although they'd have to balance properly for you to access high tier units before the upgrades happen, although perhaps the big counts do this more easily e.g. Austria and Bavaria, as their levies are more rich
