Pick teams that win games but the games are long and go the full 2-1. Don't pick teams you think are going to stomp their opponent 2-0.
As for players, mid players usually are best for the core position points and support depends a bit more on card multipliers.

I had a game where we beat this cancer yesterday actually. Look here.
The beginning of this game was so fucking bad. It was like 15-2 and looked like it was over. We couldn't push in where the opponent wasnt because tinker was online early, and we had a pudge and an earth spirit who couldnt get kills early.
But we stuck in it, tried to split them as much as possible, smoked and got some pick offs, ignored the axe, and secured roshan before we tried highground. 1600avg. Just have to communicate.

For supports pick any position 5 with ward bonuses. They easily rake the most points. Other good stats are runes picked and teamfight.
For cores rather pick mid players than carry players. Best stats are runes picked, kills, deaths and teamfight.
Offlane is mostly irrelevant, rakes least points. Best stats are again teamfight and runes picked.
Also We don't know if all teams play day 1
