What's it like to own/drive one of these? I really, really like the look of them - but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on anything LR given their heinous reputation for poor reliability and expensive parts/maintenance.
Is that a meme? If something more difficult cropped up, would I be stuck taking it ONLY to a LR dealership? I know the Minis had this problem years ago, because no one knew/was qualified to work on them, meaning you had to go to a BMW dealership that had a Mini tech.
I'm mildly disturbed by the thought of owning a car made/owned by Poo-in-loos, but I really dig those LR4s.
oh yeah, I went to the Museum in Sinsheim not too long ago as well.

Dead on except for the old part. I only feel that way.
I know it's late, but if you have the money I'd recommend it. I've only taken it to LR dealerships for regular maintenance checkups and if you need a large repair I'd take it to an LR dealership. But most small things (ie fluid changes, tires, etc) can be done yourself.
It's great offroad but I don't take it much simply because repairing the bodywork is expensive. It's great in the snow.
I've got mine up to 130,000 and it's given me no serious trouble other than needing a new battery.
Pros,
-Great seating position and visibility, no blindspots
-Will get you through any weather
-Super comfortable
-Good transmission (8 speed auto with tiptronic and a great low range)
-Great amenities (4 zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, great sound system)
-Great off road features (crawl mode, air ride suspension, locking diffs)
-Keyless entry (can be either a pro or con depending on your preference)
Cons,
-Poor mileage 12 city 18 hwy
-Keyless
-Expensive to fix if something breaks
-some are known to have electrical problems
If you are going to buy one you have to be willing to take care of it.

I'd like to think not. Got the car as a hand me down from my grandma because we were "tight on money." Family proceeds to buy a brand new Sonata for $16k because it was "such a good deal." Tried getting the RX8 or 350z, but that was too expensive.

But the v6 Passat with the auto stick is not boring. Sure it won't beat performance cars, and the cornering is not sporty, but it is pretty fun to drive and beats most normie rides off the line.
I did have the opportunity to drive an 3.2 FSI and it is more than twice the experience of my 1.6 MPI. But the 3.2 and 3.6 are unicorns in a sea of 1.9 and 2.0 TDI.
I might consider upgrading to a 2.0 FSI. I would have gone for a 2.0 TFSI but I heard that it is an incredible oil burner (up to 1L oil/1000 km)
