I really want a darker trails game that follows Kevin and Ries around Zemuria as they do church business in the style of the prologue for third.

I expected The 3rd to be just that. You go around Liberl, helping people in the ways of the church, hunting heretics, etc. When i realized it was a dungeon crawler, i was a bit disappointed, but by the end i really enjoyed it. Phantasma ended up being something different which was nice.

Same for me, the prologue was incredible and got me hyped for a game we didn't get. I still loved third but I'd love something in the style of the prologue in a full game. Ideally not just in Liberl though.

Saying that I get what you mean, would make a great spin-off though. Even the prologue of third had some more mature themes, the villain was an arms dealer, Kevin tries to have an affair with a married woman and he threatens to murder an entire airship. Not quite full edgelord but with the reformed kev after third it would be an interesting look at the darker side of Zemuria.

There were matures themes in 3rd yes, but the overall tone for the series is very much family friendly. I think user wants a game where the game is consistently dark, not just a couple of cutscenes that shoot the age rating up like it is in 3rd.

I am that user, is what I mostly want. Darker and more mature themes throughout but not full on constant Paradise/Chapter 7 level darkness.

Age rating would get bumped up but not to a full 18 rating. You are right that it probably wouldn't be family friendly enough for the main series though.

The overall tone of 3rd was dark. it had an entirely different atmosphere, from the opening screen to the ending. Not sure what you're talking about.

Open up the first 2 sky games then open up 3rd. The difference is clear.

C is basically a teen rating.

SC had some darks bits, like Hamel and the implications around it and S-Crafts and some attacks showing blood, but in the end they were more tame.

Unless Falcom has said that it'll be dark, I'm going to assume that it'll be family friendly.

The protagonist is the big difference, SC has cheerful Eselle who throughout the game tries to save and uses a staff so she'll never kill anyone. Third starts with Church assassin Kevin fight through a civilian airship, kidnap a guy and then says they're lucky he didn't have a reason to kill every single last person on the airship.

He's also one of the few characters in the entirety of trails to be shown actually killing someone which is something.

Even between CS and CSII, I think they must have been warned for steeping over the line in CS because I don't remember anything close in the latter to the people laying dead on a pool of their blood in garrelia fortress or the jaeger dropout being eaten by a giant spider.

Party members with protagonists only when Falcom?

You can sort of get it in 3, Estelle, Kevin, Ries and Joshua are all playable as the main character at various points of the series.

So Rean and Kevin would carry that team hard then. Estelle is mediocre and I heard Lloyd is too.

Lloyd has some decent moves, like the spinning move that sucks enemies to him, or brave smash and burning heart for turn manipulation and buffing.

Estelle is not mediocre. She's good at everything.

She's perfectly average at everything. She can fill any slot but she won't excel at it. With 5-3 lines she would have been a damn good mage though.

Simple. XSeed is trying to cement themselves as the go-to publisher for the Western releases. They lost Ys VIII because they didn't expect any competition. Now that they have legitimate competition they will double down and try to localize as many Falcom IPs as possible. Why do you think they bothered with Zwei 2?

During today’s stream, XSEED Games (with a pink keromin, even) has announced that they will be releasing Ys Seven for PC sometime during the summer. They have shown the game to be working already, displaying it in action on video.

This is not the same port as Joyoland made a few years back, but instead this is a completely new contract. It runs smoothly with high resolution and 60FPS. Tom has also confirmed that the game will have an updated translation, as well.

Is XSeed fucking serious? They did more marketing for Ys VII then they did for Cold Steel.

It's looking great as of the stream today, that's for sure.

They've contracted a port team, so still no in-house porting as far as we know. And it's not the Joyoland version, so it's already going to be a nicer port by far.

Nick @ XSEED (the editor on Zwei II) mentioned how he had to stall the Zwei II project last year to help on Xanadu Next and other games, so no. Ys Seven's port is the closest to a definite reaction we've gotten so far, since Zwei II and CS PC were planned a while before NISA's announcement.

Games like I & II Chronicles, Oath in Felghana, and Memories of Celceta work handsomely. VIII looks really great, but maybe something to savor after experiencing the classics. There's also Ys VI if you want more world-building and cool characters, but with weaker combat/bosses vs. Oath/Origin.

I don't know what's going on with how they're marketing CS PC. But something needs to happen soon or it's gonna undersell. That said, who knows what they'll do to spread word about Ys Seven PC.
