Open preferences and turn down draw distance in graphics tab will improve your fps. You don't want it to be super high all the time.

Years ago you could make a "good" avatar for free. You can still make that avatar, it's just going to look extremely outdated. The amount of time and work going into products is higher, so people don't give out good bodies and heads for free.
Your best bet is working with what you have instead of going for a specific look. People are willing to help you out, and might buy something small for you. However, if you're wholly unwilling to 1) spend money every once in a while 2) find a way to make money, you won't get very far.
You can make a little money from Linden Realms if you don't want to do things like escort or work for a club.

It depends on the mesh body. Bodies rigged to the volume bones are called "fitmesh"; they adjust with many (but not all) sliders. Bodies that are not fitmesh react mainly to length sliders (arm length, leg length, etc), but not things that determine shape. Using a combination of length and body thickness/shoulder width/hip width sliders, you can get them to slim down or tone up at various heights, but it isn't very controlled.

Fitmesh bodies include (but are not limited to): Maitreya, Belleza, Slink Physique, Aesthetic, ONA Kobold/Dvalinn Deer, Fitted mesh torso addon for kemono, Durpbutt avatars (limited), BG solarian, Avatar 2.0's ass and legs.

Non-fitmesh bodies include: The rest of Avatar 2.0, stock kemono, most feral avatars (volume bones behave unpredictably with those.) You can buy fitmesh clothes and try to make them fit on non-fitmesh bodies through shape sliders.
