The 302 like most 60s designs has fairly crappy head and intake geometry. Ford much like everyone else chose to meet tail pipe emissions regulations by reducing the output of the engine hence the crappy heads, but also secondary air injection and thermoreactors and later cats because tail pipe emissions regulations at the time were for bulk emissions during a test period. Burn less fuel and move less air? Emit less and pass. The proper solution, a new higher efficiency, lighter design would be an ideal solution (ie the modular or in other cases the ls1/vortec 350 or the magnium la motors). But since emissions are bulk output they favor 6 and 4 cylinder engines of low displacement, less displacement less air moved less emissions. Good voulmetric efficiency also helps if you want power too. Also the prevailing attitude in Detroit post 75 until the late 80s was that the v8 would die out and be replaced with inline 4s and v/i6s so little devlopment effort was made to replace aging v8 designs, until the fuel crisis began to wane in the mid to late 80s/early 90s.

Nah, sn95 kept the weight down. The 5.0 94-95 only weighed a hundred more pounds than the foxbody, but all disc brakes and 5lugs, with a slightly better suspension. The new edges do nothing but add weight and body panels to the exact same platform. Putting the pi swap in the sn95 for the 4.6's = a better car than the new edge.
