Yeah, it's sword dependent and work for each sword individually.

I feel like I have to take a lot of these generic abilities to make signs work, IE Rage Management, Adrenaline Burst, and Focus.

this isn't what you're asking but any build you choose will do fine, no matter how anti-synergistic it is, if you play decently at any difficulty
