can I make an arena shooter with Unreal ENgine 4?

That's the only genre you CAN make.

Is game instance what I should be looking at if I want to save player data in between levels?e.g. player leaves hub level by loading another map and when he comes back he has the same score? Talking about UE4

Should spell-casters be inhibited by wearing heavier armor? Why or why not?

Those sullying my name are probably the same pro gogem posters who harassed me a few nights ago.

Yep. You need to make a child blueprint and cast to it whenever you GetGameInstance.
Yes. For Game Balance.

Not liking this "incremental improvement doesn't mean anything because it's still bad right now" meme.

Some of you guys have some seriously unhealthy memes.

Pic related: No sleeping here you goddamn hobos.

Fucking stupid question that depends entirely on how you want to balance your game.

Namefagging without a tripcode is being gogem.

>Godot now has Python support
The best engine now has the best language. How can Unity even recover?

Please check your user priveledge.
No progress is better than shit progress.

I think that'd be the easiest way to do it, but maybe it'd be better to have that data saved to the server until a new game is started. That way even if the player's game crashes, he can still rejoin and get his score back.

What causes so many adult games to be abandonware?

How do you make saves forward-compatible?

What are the advantages of 2D over 3D?

Because you lose all motivation after you jack off.

Same reason anything becomes abandoned: devs getting in over their heads, not seeing any money, and dropping it.

There's also the more insidious problem of a game getting funded and development slowing to a crawl.

Damnit "abandonware" is already a term, and it doesn't mean that.

Abandonware is old games where nobody claims ownership / the companies folded.

>no chicken in op

very racist

Catch save files that aren't up to date upon loading, fill in the missing data with default values, then proceed as normal

Developer ego, developer underestimating the project and thinking it will be easy money (especially for text games), and your standard developer burnout.

You want attention and you wear a name without a tripcode, this would make you as bad as gogem except that you're also a proud nodev.

Definitely the worst poster in agdg history. Can I ask what motivated you to be this instead of a gamedev?

Because many devs think that making porn means they won't have to work.

Also everyone thinks your game is basically crap and they will be ashamed of you if they know you personally.

So what did you do this weekend, agdg?

More pixels.
I miss the cock.
This is my true calling, friend. I never claimed to be a dev, only to be a helpful source of knowledge for AGDG.

redesigned this weapon for the 3rd time. one of the trade offs for pixel art, the more complex weapon designs need to be slightly simplified.

So, I'm working on a Metroidvania/exploration-based platformer, except the actual way of fighting enemies is just jumping on their heads Mario style.

Has this been done?

>they will be ashamed of you if they know you personally.

That's another one. You put all that work into your game and you can't even attribute it to yourself without embarrassment or put it on your resume. "Yeah I made Minotaur Goblin Rape Brigade"

>I never claimed to be a dev, only to be a helpful source of knowledge for AGDG.
Both are false claims.

Suck my dick. Choke on it.

Spelunky kinda does that, though you can pick up shit (max: 1) to throw at / shoot at enemies.

Everyone who posted up until now is NOT me.

have you tried getting playtesters to play an adult game? Also, even if you were to complete the adult game, it wouldnt be the best work to put on your portfolio so most devs would thought "whats the bloody point?"

If only there were some way of unambiguously determining who you are when you post...

I bet I could make a game full of porn and most of my friends wouldn't care and of those that did, most would only care because they'd want to play it.

They're more likely to judge you for randomly telling them about sex-related things you do than for making the games in the first place. It's just like your friends are happy for you if you're in a relationship and thus probably having sex, but they don't want to know your fantasies in detail.

tripcodes are for wimps. people know when it's me posting because my opinions are always of the same quality.

Are you looking for a concrete answer or my specific opinion? What type of game are we talking about here?

>Competative RPG arena game
Class balance is important and sometimes you need to restrict things in order to provide drawbacks and strengths to the class archtypes.

>Single Player RPG
I prefer a classless system where you select talents, skills, proficiency, and stats separately. Its fair enough if certain magic can only be done with an agility of 40, and wearing heavy armor reduces your agility by 20, and that makes it very unlikely to get an agility of 40 for that magic to be used while wearing heavy armor. However I like single player RPG's that take the Elder Scrolls / Fable type character building.

If you grind the training out there should be nothing restricting you from doing whatever you want. Fuck balance, it literally doesn't matter.

Shit?
Fuck off

I do this because I'm sad.

Why are you still a gamedev?

Why spend years working on a game, only to come out in debt because of the lawyer fees for fighting off patent trolls?

Also imagine your family.
>Doctor, he made a game about raping women.
>You mean he rapes women and makes a game out of it?
>No, it's a computer game.
>How is that bad?
>He has spent hours programming this game! Hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars commissioning weird people on the internet to make pictures and rape sound effects. He has never worked this hard for anything, and it's all for imaginary rape!
>I see. I will prescribe you some pills. I want you to grind them up and put them in his pizza pocket. Then leave the house unlocked and call us after you've left.
>How did you know he likes pizza pockets?
>Lucky guess, ma'am.

why are you sad?

1. I'm not

2. I'm not

Depends on how you want to balance the game.

Lets say swords are your base and everything is compared to swords in strength.
If magic is equal to swords in strength, then don't give it drawbacks, but if you want some extra quirkiness then you can make magic statistically better than swords but it has drawbacks like armour inhibiting it.

I enjoy it. And there won't be any patents involved; I'm not inventing anything.

I'm just making a parody of the Castlevania series to be released as PWYW/

Because no game. And no benis.

>HUD design
Just McFucking kill me now. While I like the idea of the bullets being individually counted like this, the magazines are a bit too bulky for the rest of the HUD.

Finally a normal OP image, thank you.
Hey this looks pretty good.
Why not make bullets be just small pips?

I think that'd still leave me with my current problem: showing the extra remaining shots. Unless you're suggesting I cram 40 pips onto this thing, I have very little room to work with here.

Hey this is a pretty good series on good old games like Quake and Half life here ya go

youtube.com/watch?v=OipJYWhMi3k

Don't patent trolls only go after people who they know can actually pay up? i.e NOT about 99% of developers?

I think unless you get lucky an strike digital oil that most indie and hobby developers are safe from patent trolls (at least, as far as I know)

If you're a dev who just makes a lot of small games with low numbers, enough to live on, you're probably not a target. If you're big enough to have a legal team, you're probably ok.

The scenario that you can get caught in is: you make a game (maybe it's your 3rd or 4th, up til now it's all been low sales) without an LLC and it gets unexpectedly successful. Now you are visible from the press coverage, have a bunch of money, and no experience managing it.

>showing the extra remaining shots
I don't think you really have to do that, if the player knows that each mag is 10 shots and there are 3 mags left then he knows he's good on ammo. There's no need for unnecessary info.
But if you really want to have that kind of thing then just go with the good old numbers.
As you've noticed, trying to represent this kind of info with only visual elements may not be the most optimal way.

I don't know much about business structures, what protection does an LLC offer that, say, being a sole proprietor wouldn't?

Is it better to be the art guy or the code guy, assuming you're the one designing the game

Depends on the jurisdiction, but the main feature is separating the company's assets from your own. In the last thread an user mentioned that in their state, if you are the only member of the LLC, you don't have this protection.

why not both

Art guy. If you're also game designing, you have full creative control.

But remember that the code guy is the one actually making the game function. If they have no cr

I'm from Australia - I'm not even sure if "LLC's" are a thing here or what the equivalent is.

So basically, it acts like a "legal shield" so that your personal assets aren't at risk?

Because then I have to learn two skills instead of one

Yeah, like I said in my first post, the mags are too big and they need to either be moved, trimmed, or removed, I've been thinking about going to numbers for this, honestly. It'd certainly make the arm gun's HUD contrast from the Sword's that much more, the sword is gold, shiny, and more ornate with visual gems to keep track of your energy.

On the flip side the arm cannon's HUD is gray, muted, and more industrial, so having a numerical counter for the bullets might be the way to go. But I'm still going to have a meter for keeping track of the charge status.

Post got cut off. Was gonna say, if you can rely on a coder to do exactly what you want, go for art. But coders often want to have some creative control too, especially if it's a collab and you're not hiring them.

Also, design and coding seem more tightly linked than design and art.

Ideasguy me on a simple multiplayer game.

No MMOs please.

Supernatural creeps tag-along
You can choose your favorite create (Vampire, ghost, werewolf, Gorgon, etc.) and team up with pals to fuckup a city at night GTA-style. You get scores like burnout for the damage/chaos done and I guess you could level your abilities and whatnot. Goal is just to have fun with friends and destroy the environment.

old progress video.

i'm still working on this. just messing around with some different techniques.

Multiplayer versus clicker game. Both players race to reach an arbitrary amount of whatever currency.

Asynchronous multiplayer (players don't need to be online at the same time) clicker game. Leave notes to other players passing the same milestones, name items/places other players will be using, etc.

Does anyone remember the name of some game who was developed by some programmer who used to have a dev blog and tutorials on how to code things? The game was about quare and other geometric shapes and had a lot of color splashing like in Splatoon.
I know that Steam 100% have it but I can't find it at all.

Every single progress post of yours put a smile on my face.
Great work dude.

Ink

I've been away for a few months and I am so fucking glad to see you're still here. Your game is so stupid and I love it.

>Ink
That's it!
Thank you m8

sorry it took so long
had a big bowl of oatmeal and also a pb&j so ended up in a midday food coma / sugar crash

it is old progress, glad you like them though. i'm really hoping to make another break through soon because i want to get started on the actual game aspect of this game.

shit sorry wrong version!!!
please accept my apologies!
here is the fan art you ordered!

You been hustling with your marketing like you should?

Here's my progress for the last few days: this text box. You never realize just how convenient Widgets are until gamemaker forces you to implement your own.

this is going to sell so damn much

oh goodness user
of all the things in the game I didn't expect this to be the first thing lewded

this took me way too long for how simple it is but i'm starting to get the hang of it

Do you have a level in mind or is this a prototype for it?

loled at the kick at the end

Nice ideas, keep 'em coming

Looking good man.

I know you don't want to be a meme game. But what you have right now, even if it doesn't fit your vision, is of real value to people and is worth playing.

You should really start building some game structures around it. Have you ever set up missions for yourself, even if not hardcoded, and tried to beat them? Defeat all enemies, move to the end of the level, etc.

Have you considered the marketing path where you give a meme game to streamers and then build what you want on top of it once you have a playerbase?

Looks ready to ship.

its all a protoype sandbox area for now but i know exactly how i want to set the levels up and what the general layout of the areas are going to be. i'm hoping to have a level design similar to Rune, severance, or jedi outcast 2. something linear with checkpoints, but a scrap based currency system that incentivises risk taking.

I agree it's possible for him to package something playable soon from the looks of it, but he seems to have an entire game in mind with certain design styles maybe a plot, not sure yet. He could release a meme game now and expand it with a full game with story later, both games would sell. People do want to play this prototype right now though.

youtube.com/watch?v=EcOi6npIsVc

I've been struggling for days to do this via script/inputs, but god can anyone help me?

I'm trying to get inputs in Unity that get the axis as a button or single press input rather than a full axis. I want this so that I can get commands like "Right + AttackButton" or "Down + AttackButton" but no matter what I cannot get this to work properly for the life of me without have the bool I use stay on as long as the axis is pushed.

Any ideas? It'd really be appreciated.

>You should really start building some game structures around it. Have you ever set up missions for yourself, even if not hardcoded, and tried to beat them? Defeat all enemies, move to the end of the level, etc.

i've made a few test levels and i've gotten a feeling for how i want the pacing of the engadments to go. i really want to see if i can incoporate more fluid platforming elements (ledge grabs, wall jumping, vaulting,) but that's kind of a tall order for now.

>Have you considered the marketing path where you give a meme game to streamers and then build what you want on top of it once you have a playerbase?

i've decided i'll probably give the streamers that contacted me a sandbox area they can meme around in that's at least tonally consistent with the kind of atmosphere i want. it may also end up being the kickstarter demo. my goal is something that's kind of dry and deadpan, that isn't too self serious. something like machinarium mixed with zeno clash.

the picture is by jake parker, not me btw. i just really like this kind of character geometry.

i'll be making a special build for the streamers and other people that asked for one. it won't resemble what i have in mind for the actual game however.

Working on a windmill right now. Hopefully will be textured and animated within the next 3 or so hours.

>get game idea
>Get giddy with excitement
>Too tired to dev but too excited to sleep
>Too tired to Vidya too

Fuck

Write the idea down you fuck

When I'm in that kind of state, I usually spend a few hours watching Seinfeld or something.
