It's over

>self driving cars become much cheaper than normal cars
>very few people still drive themselves
>constant shitstorms about how it's to dangerous
>driving is banned

Anyone else see this happening, at least in Europe?

The first time a "self driving" car kills a child it's all over.

Nothing of value would be lost and teslas stock would be devastated it'd be a win win situation

Year 2049:
>Mass debate about self driving cars being mandated
>Debate at a stalemate
>suddenly a car driven by a manual driver drives into a school playground, killing 23 children
>the news is all over the place for 1 month, with mass media shaming manual drivers, shaming manual driving as baby-killing
>Being in favor of manual driving suddenly becomes socially taboo and manual driving is promptly banned with "overwhelming public support" during the heat of the incident without giving anyone time to think.

Sounds familiar? I just wrote what happened in UK, Australia and NZ with the gun control debate in the 1990's, just replacing guns with "manual driving."

Insurance companies offer to install botnets in your car for discounts and it hasn't taken off.

>insuring your car

What are you a communist?

Mostly because those kits almost always raise your premiums.

"ye"

they won't be able to ban driving any time soon

also consider the following

>less normies that hate driving, don't pay attention or are too old to drive on the roads
>cheaper insurance for everyone. majority self driving cars + some enthusiasts/holdouts will still be way safer than what we have now
>the world switching to electrics will mean tons of oil left for the enthusiast
>emissions won't mean shit once amount of ICE cars on the road shrinks a 100 or a 1000 fold
>more tracks will open up to fill the demand for driving thrills

I'm really curious how a the ethics of self driving cars get worked out.

Hypothetical situation, pedestrian walks into the road, car sees it and has to decide, do I run over the pedestrian and potentially kill them or swerve into a telephone pole and potentially kill the driver.

Someone has to program those decisions into the software, at least with a manually operated car a human is making a split second decision in the moment, it's not predetermined.

>(((insurance)))

thats an often asked question, and its part of the reason that people wont buy them.
Now most people will say "the least amount of people", or "Avoid hitting someone at any cost", both would probably mean injuring the driver.
ask them if its a good idea, they say yes, ask them if they want to buy one, they say FUCK no.
apology for disjointed english, both drunk and russian

In freedom land classix cars are cheap af to insure. I don't predict cars with "old" technology will experience any negative effects from more modern cars being introduced.

naming the insurance industry is Veeky Forums-related

I think some of your points are overly optimistic. It's more likely that the cost of gasoline will skyrocket once most vehicles stop using it. Motor oil and Gasoline will become extremely scarce since there's no point in manufacturing and developing it anymore for the big corporations. Some companies will emerge that specialize in supplying ICE vehicles owned by hobbyists, but side the economy of scale of no longer present it will be hugely expensive. Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a tank of gas or a gallon of synthetic motor oil, fifty dollars and up for a filter. Basically, current day exotic car maintenance costs for a normal car and crazy hypercar costs for any rare or exotic car. $400 to do a diy oil change on a Civic? You betcha.

>murica
>MUH RIGHTZ
>literally multiple daily mass shootings

reminder that this guy will be the following in the future:

>auto enthusiasts
>MUH FUN AND RIGHTZ
>literally daily manual driving fatalities

Self driving fags need to be redirected to /n/

Without having any authrotiative opinion, I think they would program it to stop as best it can without swerving. That will be the safest outcome most of the time. You may hit the dude who has stepped onto the street but you avoid taking out other cars or a family standing on the sidewalk. The same as if it were an animal that jumped in front of the car.

Animals are gay dude.

>Implying the fossil fuel industry would ever allow a government to make them obsolete.

No once they feel a threat to their existence, the fossil fuel corporations will use their trillion dollar capital to take over the "green" energy industry and resume business as usual.

If they feel that fossil fuel is no longer profitable or popular, they will adapt. It's just like how the big badges (e.g. Honda, BMW) are starting to make Electric Vehicles because they are starting to see a market there.

In short, Tesla is fucked.

maybe a bit. just bringing some a different perspective to the Veeky Forumstist electric doomsday circlejerk

I didn't say gas will remain as cheap, just that there will be plenty of it left. Depending on the size of the ICE enthusiast community, there may be enough business in the country to run at least a single refinery full time. It's not like it'll be some small business lad in his garage brewing designer gasoline. The oil companies can just decommission the extra infrastructure as demand drops, but mass manufacturing should still remain just in smaller quantities.

Not in NZ, we can still have guns. Just no pistols or fully automatics without a special license

Correct. We are civilised though, don't forget that.

Car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK.
