So, I recently purchased a 2011 Audi S4 with the DSG transmission and Sport differential (first "automatic" I've ever owned).
I had to trade-up because commuting in rush-hour traffic with a heavily modified Mazdaspeed3 was beginning to wear on me.
The S4 is an amazing vehicle, and I was definitely overdue for a comfy but fun daily. The wife seems to like it because the exhaust isn't waking her up on the morning. Haha!

I have been considering one of those, can get one 2011-2012 for $25K Canada bucks. What will the cost of maintenance look like and anything to watch out for? Also is the upgrade to 2013 worth extra $?

I recently sold my 2008 Impala and got a 2015 A4 P+. I love it. It's so nice and comfy. Lately I've been going out on late night drives while listening to some vapor wave. Which I never did in any of the other cars I owned. I'll probably end up trading this up to a 2018 Prestige model (this car lot 2 hours away from is selling the same model for only 40k at 3k miles, which is a steal.)

If you can wrench yourself, and get a drivetrain/electronics warrant, I don't see this car being too expensive.
I priced out a kit for around $500 that includes: Engine oil and filter Engine air filter Spark plugs DSG fluid and filters Diff fluid Brake fluid flush Cabin air filter
So, pay an extra $1k after purchase for this kit and an extended warranty, then you should be good for awhile.

Is it the one where you have to pull the front fender off to service the timing chain, or the one where you have to pull the whole engine to service the timing chain?

The issues are pretty much exclusive to the chain-drive 40V V8. Older belt-drive 4.2 V8s are overall very solid engines as long as you keep up with belt changes, and the later FSI 4.2 V8s don't use all-plastic guides and tensioners anymore so while they're still a pain to repair, they're nowhere near as likely to grenade below 100k.

VW is better anyway since the price now reflects the actual quality of the car.
